Forums - Gaming - The Greatest Console ever?

The greatest console is...

NES 42 11.80%

SNES 72 20.22%

N64 38 10.67%

Wii 14 3.93%

Playstation 23 6.46%

Playstation2 127 35.67%

Atari 2600 2 0.56%

SEGA Genesis 11 3.09%

Magnovox Odyssey 2 0.56%

Xbox360 25 7.02%

Total:356

Even though I love my PS3, I concur in that the PS2 is the greatest console ever so far. This generation has not so many games due to increase in cost; but most of the PS3 exclusives are just stellar.

The Gamecube.

There are no valid arguments against this.

I'd like to agree with you because my favorite game is a GameCube game. And the GameCube's general failure ultimately led to the Wii, which helped kick off a stream of attempts at innovation that will probably never stop, nor would I ever want it to ever stop because I think it's uproariously funny and occasionally rewarding.

But I gotta give it to the Nintendo 64. Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time 3D laid the groundwork for nearly everything great about 3D game design (totally subjective), and Majora's Mask serves as the ultimate example of why I never pay attention to age ratings.

Huh..the Gamecube led to motion control...

Ok you've convinced me, vote retracted.

Again, it's uproariously funny and occasionally rewarding... to me.

Lack of Dreamcast is unacceptable.

Dump something and put Dreamcast on the list. If it were me I'd trash one of the Playstations for the Dreamcast.

Dreamcast is THE greatest console of all time. It is a crime that so many ignored it and waited for the PS2.

Actually, change my answer to PC. Unbeatable as a console.

PC is not a console. No matter how usefull and kick ass PCs are, they just aren't consoles. Consoles are dedicated gaming machines with proprietary hardware designed around a closed architecture and  only liscensed software can run on them. None of that describes a PC.

Playstation 2. This generation didn't even come close for me.

But why???? Why PS2? Magnovox was the FIRST console ever, NES saved the busniess, Xbox360 had HD... what did PS2 have?

That's some of the worst reasoning ever. The PS2 ranks above the 360 by any reasonable standard

Outside of a huge library what was so special about the Ps2?  The 360 gave us multiple sku's to increase affordability.  It had revolutionary online experience and was the first console to innovate with online updates.  Cross game chat, background music, media centre capabilities.  There are many more and people forget the 360 (and Ps3 but it was later) have changed consoles forever.  The Ps2 was a success due to its games, not its hardware.

My personal list is the NES because it reinvigorated the industry.

Then the Ps1 for the 3d revolution it brought and proof that disk based consoles were the future

Nothing. The PS2 isn't particularly important, but the 360 is even less so. As for your case for the 360:

1. More like a cop-out to be able to say that there is a price point within reason.
2. Online multiplayer existed before, most of the framework in question was already established with the Xbox.
3. Firmware updates? The PSP already did that. In many cases it's more of a nuisance than a benefit though.
4. Cross game chat isn't that special and may not even be relevant for the majority of gamers.
5. Background music? I guess that refers to playing music of your choice from the HDD. Xbox did that.
6. The media center stuff doesn't benefit gaming, quite the opposite actually.

And you said it yourself, the PS2's biggest plus point were its games. That's why it ranks above the 360

Actually the multimedia aspect of a console is very important.  Can't believe you seriously think the Ps2 ranks that far ahead, it brought nothing to the table as those games would still have been released without the Ps2, though on the 2 technically superior consoles that gen. When cross game chat is universal next gen you'll understand why it was so important.

N64, since it had most of my favorite games, followed closely by SNES. I choose these systems because of not only their games, but the great quality of the product. This is why PS2 was not even up for consideration; sure it has the most games but the system itself was crummy. (I have had to buy 3 of them because of this) Also, out of all of its games, none of them were very memorable in my eyes. When I think of that gen, games like Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Zelda OOT come to mind. I have more PS2 games than N64, yet I can't think of a single one that left a lasting impression on me...

It feels like you're asking two different questions in the OP.

By logic it would be Magnavox, it's what started this whole charade. Thank you Mr. Baer.

By personal preference it would be psx but i already chose Magnavox.

Well, what I wanted really were for the community to sit down and think about which console really is the greatest. Which one have had the most impact? Yes, Magnavox were the first console, but they (consoles) probably were bound to become popular sooner or later. In many many ways NES shaped the business more than Magnavox did... IMHO =)

Ah I do not disagree with you, because you are right. But like i said, the question in the op could have been clearer.

Maganavox - credit for the idea.

NES - without a doubt the biggest influence

PS - deciding to make it disc-based

(Atari for coming up with pong...)

And while i put the ps up there, i'm not even sure if that's such a big deal.

Progression in graphics is absolute bull at this point in time. So we're supposed to awe every week at the newest GPU and CPU the PC market throws at us? We're no apple fans are we?

You might want to start a debate on where these consoles would be ranked for importance and influence they had on the industry. But then again, who gets to decide the ranking ;P.
