The word "great" is open for interpretation and many people don't read beyond the thread title before they comment, so you'll have to live with a lot of unsatisfactory responses.

One of the many reasons why the NES is the greatest console ever is because it can be considered the ‘foundation’ of the videogame industry. Foundation, in the sense that the NES is what the gaming industry stands on today – a good foundation.

Now, while some people would argue that if we’re talking about foundations, then consoles before the NES should also be consider as foundations of this industry. I would submit however that those foundations were poor and could not sustain the videogame industry. That house and industry before the NES fell because of not having a good foundation.

Nintendo and the NES, on the other hand, built up the current videogame industry and it has remained standing ever since. The videogame industry has had lots of new facelifts from the to time, console generation to console generation, but it’s because of the good foundation of the NES and its hardware, its games, its developers, its publishers, its vision of an industry, etc, etc, that make the videogame industry the pinnacle of entertainment it is today.

And that is just one reason why the NES is the greatest console ever.

I voted for the NES because of its games and its importance for the US market. If I'm not wrong it still holds the record of the percentage of US homes with one console, which is impressive given how much the PS2 sold well there.

I'd like to agree with you because my favorite game is a GameCube game. And the GameCube's general failure ultimately led to the Wii, which helped kick off a stream of attempts at innovation that will probably never stop, nor would I ever want it to ever stop because I think it's uproariously funny and occasionally rewarding.

But I gotta give it to the Nintendo 64. Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time 3D laid the groundwork for nearly everything great about 3D game design (totally subjective), and Majora's Mask serves as the ultimate example of why I never pay attention to age ratings.

Huh..the Gamecube led to motion control...

No Sega Master System?  Clearly the more powerful system vs. NES but NES had better marketing and reach, so it sold more but some of us enjoyed the Sega Master System.

What about Intellivision?

You are clearly missing some systems in your list, painting a not so clear picture for us.
