Forums - Nintendo - Why the Wii U might be set up for failure

I don't think "set up for failure" is neither fair nor correct but I do think that it will sell quite a bit less than the Wii. The reasons for this have little to do with the author's muscle memory, though... Strange article, there are so many other things to focus on than the classic controller, and they mostly make more sense too.

Exchanging the position of the face buttons and the right analog stick (Wii U vs the other two) is a problem, but exchanging the position of the d-pad and the left analog stick (PS3 vs the other two) wasn't.

Double standards, anyone?

how is the playstation controller at all comparable when that was its basic form factor from the beginning?

It's not a big casual hit, and it doesn't quite appeal to the bulk of core gamers so it won't be nearly as big as the Wii, and it probably won't finish first place, but that doesn't mean it'll be a failure. There's still a huge audience who'll buy it and support it for years - the Nintendo fans.

It will end up being a combination of gamecube and wii. As a hardcore gamer who's a Nintendo fan this is greatly preferable to the wii which was my least favorite Nintendo console of all time. Nintendo will sell fewer consoles than wii but they will sell more games and dlc to those who bought than console on average. Many we consumers were willing to buy a console for wii sports but then didn't buy very many additional games over time.

So the WiiU is the strongest console when it launches then?  You are tying yourself up in knots.

lol

Stick to your reviews, they make more sense.

wii u weaker than x360/ps3 confirmed?

Lets look at the sales of previous versions of a few exclusive launch Wii U games ...

New Super Mario U (Total series sales 57.72 million copies)
- New Super Mario Bros. 28.64 Million copies
- New Super Mario Bros. Wii 25.96 Million copies
- New Super Mario Bros. 2 3.12 Million copies (note: Still selling amazingly well)

Wii fit U (Total series sales 43.56 million copies)
- Wii Fit 22.73 Million
- Wii Fit Plus 20.83 Million

Lego City (Total series sales 79.69 million units, 17.32 million Wii alone)

And Nintendoland *could* be argued to be the spiritual successor to games like Wii Sports, Wii Play and Wii Party which sold a combined 146.2 million units on the Wii

None of these titles get nearly the respect they deserve, consider that the 'almighty' Halo series has only sold 50.79 million copies and each of these series is far newer than Halo (and with the exception of the Lego series) has had far fewer games released to make up these sales. The Wii U launch line-up lacks an exclusive "Mature" system selling game but it already has several system sellers.

Never noticed that they reversed the X-Y and A-B buttons compared to 360. That should be a bit confusing for those that are used to that gamepad.

No offense man, but they didn't reverse anything. It's been like this since the olden SNES (Famicom) days. It's like this on the Classic Controller Pro.

Yeah, but now they're trying to draw in the "hardcore" 360 players more than they did previously. Not a big thing I guess.

you sir are trying to make a dust storm from a handful of dirt. possible, but not a very good dust storm now is it. nope.

NINTENDO

nintendo forever . . .

Never mind...

I stopped reading after he mentioned Halo and Wii Sports as "system sellers" in the same sentence. This is probably what pezus also believes, he just doesn't want to eat so much crow if he said this and ended up being wrong.

Nintendo didn't reverse anything, only Microsoft did.  Have a look at the SNES controller.

EDIT: Beaten... horribly.

I think the Wii U will initially sell well basically because of NSMU and latter Wii U Fit.

If Nintendo releases in 2013 Wii U Sports and a Mario Kart U plus a NSMU bundle, the console will sell well for another fiscal year.
