Forums - Nintendo - Why the Wii U might be set up for failure

You lost your credibility when you said that NSMB is not a system seller

Around the Network

Wii U is obviously going to do well this year and in 2013 but the issues facing it aren't price or the controller layout, it's the same issues that the Wii faced compared to the 360/PS3 and that is its specs and online network.

Basically there's going to be a similar gap in hardware specs between the Wii U and XBox720/PS4 as there is now between Wii and Xbox360/PS3. It's kind of funny considering they came out and said it was the reason why the Wii didn't get a lot of major 3rd party games and implied that that they fixed it with the Wii U and it turns out to not be the case (just read up on Wii U memory bandwidth or its CPU for example).

In 2014 and beyond the Wii U is very likely going to go back to the very familiar game droughts that plagued the Wii only this time there won't be the massive casual audience to keep it in check. That's when hardware sales are likely going to begin falling behind the competition and then become a serious problem for Nintendo.

Add to that the fact that it's like they're being dragged kicking and screaming into the online realm with choices that seem ridiculous compared to what the next generation Xbox 720 and PS4 are going to be offering. Anyone that has been watching the hiring spree Microsoft has been having for people to work on its online knows it's going to be a significant jump from the Xbox 360. The Wii U doesn't even seem like it'll be a serious contender against Xbox Live as it is now let alone the next generation of Xbox Live.

Your rationalization is inconcise, way too early in judgement, and furthermore it seems as though you yourself have problems interpreting your own thought patterns. Not sure why you would say that.

To think that 80 million customers are just going to dissapear off the face of the planet is really quite a remarkable achievement in denial though, congrats.

Just like it's a remarkale achievement for the 150 million people who bought a PS2 to not by the PS3? Consumers don't just cling like that. The bulk of the 95 million or so who've bought the Wii are casual gamers, and most moved on from the Wii years ago apart from the odd Just Dance game, which they don't need a Wii U for and the Kinect is a lot more appealing to that crowd anyway. Look at the buzz around the Wii at launch, that thing was massive with the casuals. The Wii U? Most don't even really know what it is (I would bet a lot don't even know it exists)... so that's why I don't think it'll be a big casual hit.

So let's talk about core gamers then. The only core gamers that seem to be really excited about the Wii U are Nintendo fans with a few exceptions. I'm not a Nintendo fan, I am a core gamer, and I kind of want it... but "kind of want it" is about as far as I'll go, and it's farther then where most core gamers will go. They just aren't interested for the most part. They are either more than satisfied with their current HD console/PC or waiting on the other 2 next gen consoles. Hell, sometimes it feels like there's more buzz around Orbis and Durango than the Wii U and they haven't even been announced yet. The last 2 reasons why it doesn't appeal to most core gamers is hardware-wise, it's a fairly small leap over what we have already, and do you think most core gamers care about the GamePad?

Sure, I am judging pretty early on... but so what? This site is largely about speculation and predictions, and if you don't want to discuss that than don't reply to speculations and predictions.

On the Kinect being more appealing for dance games:

Just Dance 4 Wii, 6 weeks on the market, 799,246 sales
Dance Central 3 XBox 360, 4 weeks on the market, 120,000 sales

Beyond that, the statistics are a couple years old (and I can't find the graphic anymore) around half of XBox 360 and PS3 owners also owned a Wii; which worked out to be roughly half of the Wii's userbase at the time. How does this match with your assumption that "The bulk of the 95 million or so who've bought the Wii are casual gamers"

Not making a claim about you in particular, but I love how certain Sony/Microsoft fans can go from claiming that their Wii collects dust and that they are dissappointed with Skyward Sword/Mario Galaxy 2 to then claiming that no-one except casual gamers ever bought the Wii. I also remember when the Playstation userbase was "casual" gamers, and when the XBox "Frat-boy" gamer was dismissed in a similar way to casual gamers today are, and surprisingly the Ultra-Casual FPS Halo is still one of the more popular FPS on the market

this is a crap article. especially the controller section. I dont think i even finished reading after that

I know you prefixed this para with "not making a claim about you in particular", but what's the relevance at all? I've not said either of those things.

I meant it will be more appealing to them than the Wii U dude, in fact will Just Dance even be on the Wii U? If so it'd use the Wiimotes right? Then the casual audience that wants that would just play it on their wii or the nextbox. The Wii won't matter next gen obviously, but the kinect will still be around.

edit: actually, just re-read. I never made it clear that I meant in comparison to the Wii U. My bad.
