Forums - Gaming - What would have happened if Nintendo would have taken up Sony on their offer before the N64 came out?

At the time Sony was not interested in video games. The deal was going to be for a CD add-on for the SNES. When that fell through Ken Kutaragi convinced Sony to let him build a game system. I think if Nintendo had gone through with the Sony SNES CD add-on we would not have seen a 32-bit Playstation. We may have gotten a CD N64, but I think the Sega Saturn would have been a much bigger success and the Dreamcast would not have been Sega's last console. Sony would probably have jumped into the race in the sixth or current gen, but who knows if they would have been as successful now as they were then. The Playstation was so successful because the mistakes of both Sega and Nintendo left a big hole that Sony filled.

It's and interesting topic to ponder.

no..

If nintendo had taken up that offer Sony would have owned all of their franchises.. and basically eventually had bought out nintendo.. once they realized that the CD N64 was a huge success(more than likely would have been)

Also.. it's possible that sony may have never entered the gaming world.. since sony's boss who was pushed by ken kutagari gave it the okay to try a game console when he felt betrayed by nintendo..

mM

Sega would very probably be here [dat arcade feeling]

and the huge online attempt initiated with the Dreamcast would have [less probably] been a huge success on Dreamcast 2 somewhat preventing MS from entering the market

This will answer all your questions regarding why Sony entered the gaming business. Of course Nintendo had something to do with it also.

The "Playstation" meaning the hybrid Super NES + CD drive would've come out.

So would've the Super NES CD-ROM.

Both would've sold minimal quantities as an add-on released late in the console cycle, and maybe been Japan only.

Sony would've been contracted to supply the CD-drive + sound chip for the Nintendo successor to the SNES, and the actual Playstation console as we know it probably never would've happened.

Nintendo's partnership with Panasonic was just fine. As long as the other end plays nice and is not a backstabber, there is no concern nor issue.

I think the backstabber would be Nintendo in your story.

Yeah, it's Sony and Nintendo, they both f'ed up. But Sony is the first offender by putting in bogus clauses in the contract which Nintendo had no idea about.

Yeah no, Nintendo was full aware what the contracts were about, they backstabbed Sony and chose someone else. Sony's revenge was sweet though.

You're denying history, and that's wrong.

Nintendo was unaware and infuriated when they discovered the hidden clauses, from what I remember.

Hey, let's do this, you try to find a source, I'll try to find a source. Fair?

That way we don't argue who's daddy's greater than who.

Nintendo seems to use and then lose whoever they partner with. So even if they did work with Sony and make a cd add on that was more successful than the sega CD or Saturn who is to say Nintendo still would not have gone to cartridges?

Would Sony have still made the PS?

probably would have ended with Sony and Nintendo merging together.

However, I think the video game market would be greatly diminished from what it is today.
