Animal Crossing: New Leaf has notched up an eye-watering 721,786 sales during its opening week.

That number doesn't include digital downloads from the 3DS eShop. Early indications show this may account for up to 80,000 more.

...

I thought Iwata said it sold over 200,000 digitally on e-shop? Like, the worldwide president of Nintendo-Iwata.

Yeah that's what I thought as well. Perhaps they missed that tweet?

Either way those sales are damn good.

That 200k included those digital codes you bought off retail stores. So looking at Famitsu, it looks like they tracked these cards, which leaves about 80k digital sales straight from the E-shop.

3DS has now pass 8M in Japan, only 2M to go till the big 10,000,000.

Buying in 2015: Captain toad: treasure tracker,

new 3ds

yoshi woolly world

It really is a shame. I hope the vita can turn it around as it is a fantastic peice of hardware, and I would love to see it succeed.

I guess it could do that this year; but it's unlikely...

I believe the article said 39:1

It does say 39:1, but it's so close to 40:1 it just sounds neater and is easier to get your head round.

:P i just think you wanted it closer to your number.

Maaaaybe...but that does not excuse the fact that this is still a truly horrific situation!

YEs. If Sony would just take drastic measures like Nintendo did with the 3DS things could get better. Maybe this recent sony store thing or whatever it is will help. Still needs much more attentino.

The problem is Sony does not have any cash to make the same type of drastic measures. It is no secret that the company as a whole (not just their gaming division) has seen much better days, and evey day we see doom and gloom articles about Sony and other Japanese consumer electronics companies  http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/what-japans-consumer-electronics-meltdown-means-for-you/  .

I really do not see how they will be able to justify cutting the price and taking a huge financial hit (even Nintendo had difficulty with that one and they were in a mcuh better position) without  investors jumping ship.

Lifetime, the 3DS has outsold the PS Vita by almost 8:1 in Japan and nearly 7:1 globally.
These are similar to the type of numbers the Gameboy used to put up against the Lynx and the GameGear.
And I don't see Atari or Sega doing hand held hardware any longer.

Essentially, with some many other devices, there does not appear to be room for two hand held devices. And while one offers unique play and one offers console-like play, which one do you think is more likely to succeed?

(Hint -- it is not the most powerful one.)

I would be very hesitant to get a Vita. There might be a lot of closeout clearance sales come Spring.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

It's not that big of a big deal. It's not like the Vita is made in Japan or anything...

Nah, that would be ridiculous.

Of course, the games are coming. They are! And when they launch the Vita will be A-OK. So we just need to wait for the games; because 1 year on the market just isn't enough.

I agree.  Let's wait until the holidays are over before passing judgment.

Why does Vita get to have two holidays before we can pass judgment? I wanna judge NOW!

...Poor Vita. It's getting trolled so hard in this thread.
