"I must admit I pirated when I was a teen. I lived in Spain which is basically the caribbean of SW pirates, it's socially acceptable and most of my friends did it."
Lol so true.
I was (and still am) poor as well.
The only games I've pirated were a few Dreamcast games (I picked a second hand one years after its death and it was impossible to find games in stores, Ebay prices were too much for me and it's not like Sega was going to get my money if I buy them in the second hand market).
This and a few years ago I softmodded my PS2 to be able to play games even if the laser dies, and I played a few games that weren't released in Europe like Tales of the Abyss (thanks Namco for not localizing a single PS2 Tales game) and Hokuto no Ken.
| BenVTrigger said: My main question to pirates is doesnt it take a lot of time to do? I mean maybe it doesnt idk exactly how it works but it seems like it would be difficult always looking up the stuff to download, figuring out whats real or fake, and then getting it to work |
None of that is a problem. There are websites specialized in exactly this kind of stuff. When you download from there, you can usually be sure that it's real. And the whole process is hardly more complicated than downloading a file and either copying it to something like a USB stick or burning it on a DVD. It's just like a MP3 file that you download and copy onto a music player. Driving to a store and buying a game takes far more time and work.
I have to admit that I've done it too. When I modded my Wii, my original intention wasn't piracy though. Instead I was interested in WiiMC, the fantastic homebrew network media player software for the Wii that I had seen over at a friend.
When I later looked what other homebrew software there was, I tried a few backup loaders as well, and I must say, the features and comfort they offer is quite amazing, even for people who actually own all games. You can keep your whole collection of Wii games on a single USB drive, never need to swap any discs again, and the loaders allow to browse a browse a lovely visual representation of your collection, with cover images, short descriptions etc. for every game, the possibility to turn on cheats, force certain video modes etc. etc. There is no danger of ruining your original discs, loading times from the USB drive are faster, there's no noise from the DVD drive etc. It's hard to deny the advantages, especially considering that it comes at no cost since it's a pure software hack.
I used to get pirated games from my mates and I do it now and then when I'm not sure if I'll like a game. I've never pirated a console though, only on PC.
Still, I have over a hundred legally bought games from this gen (PS3, PC, Wii, Vita). The bough/pirated games rate would be something like 30:1...
On the other hand, I have about 50gigs of pirated music and I don't buy any cds since like 10 years...
I did when I was young, then I grew up, got a job in software programming, never pirated again.
It seemed to be normal when I was a kid. You exchanged cassette tapes to simply record onto a new tape. Later whole events were organized where a bunch of kids with Amiga 500's came together to copy 3.5" discs all day. Bulletin boards provided game downloads in the DOS era. Funny enough it was faster to download whole games back then on a 9600 baud modem then it is now. 14gb for Infamous 2, took me forever to download.
Yes. PC games...but just to try out games if I'm not sure I would actually like it. Most of the time I don't like them and I never would have actually decided to buy them in the first place. IMHO, it's not a lost sale for the developer because I wasn't gonna buy it anyways.
Never games, but movies, tv shows, and music all the time.
God no, I am not poor thankfully and the Devs/artists/filmakers deserve my money.
yes but only stuff that is not made readily available to me legally, I'm not waiting over a year to watch a TVs show and have it spoilt sorry, if the studios want my money the can make stuff accessible.
Games I can get within a few days/weeks for reasonable prices so I buy them.
