Chrome Books have got to be the worst idea of all time.

"Do you like the internet?"

"Yes"

"Good, because you can't do anything without it."

Seriously, why would anyone pay money for a product that becomes useless the moment you walk outside the building? Honestly, I want to know.

I don't have a use for a Chromebook myself (I'm a developer, need a PC/Mac) but if I walked outside with one, I'd simple power up my phone hotspot.

There are very few situations where I do not have a readily-available connection to the internet.

From my perspective a Chromebook can't do anything better than a Netbook or a Tablet other than keeping your data safe in the cloud rather than in jeopardy on a harddrive that could be stolen or broken. But you can use cloud storage on any PC or Tablet so I just don't see the point. Sure you can pay for extra data to use it away from WiFi, but a netbook or tablet keeps on chugging along even if the you loose data access.

Sure, but now the chromebooks are competitively priced versus the netbooks, and this will help google get a much larger portion of the NetBoot market.

Are they really cheaper if you have to pay for a data and the extra monthly fee cell companies charge to tether other devices?

I'm sorry, but I just think the whole concept of a "only works with an internet connection" is just plain terrible.

Looks cool.

Well you have to pay for data on netbooks anyway, so the question is whether you want to spend more, or not.  Simple.

Looks like a stylish netbook with limited functionality.

I'd still get this over that if I needed to choose - http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Acer+-+11.6%22+Aspire+One+Netbook+-+2+GB+Memory+-+320+GB+Hard+Drive+-+Diamond+Black/4156387.p?id=1218456970282&skuId=4156387

You don't have to pay for data on a netbook. You'd only need a data plan if you want to surf the internet away from home. You can still use a netbook like a regular computer to play games, write a novel, do your taxes, edit video, etc. A chromebook can't do any of that without a network connection so it's completely useless away from home without the extra costs of data + tethering.

No, you are confusing the issue kain. The $250 price point that I quoted IS the wifi version. All clear?

Waste of a thread.. really.

Then don't post here, go find a thread that suits you.   I also thought that it is hilarious that the rrod-box fan club has overrun this thread.  I've had to defend this thread left and right, all bc I've only mentioned a new product coming out.

I am.

I've been using only Chrome and its apps on my home PC for months. HAven't needed Windows anything.

Its faster, safer, directly connected to Google Services and its personalization and thus my phone as well.

For home use, I'd wager a great majority of users do not need anything that is Windows based or even better in Windows. That is why phones and tablets are doing so well. Most users are just fine with a web based solution.

How many people with smartphones and/or tablets now say they barely touch their PC?
