Forums - Gaming - News of Agni's Philosophy tech demo to be reviewed in June next year

Something “different” around Agni’s Philosophy, Square Enix’s next generation, Luminous Studio-based tech demo, will be revealed around June of next year (E3, we take it), Square Enix worldwide technology director Julien Merceron has teased. And whatever it is, it will run on “different platforms.”

“So, around June of next year, there will indeed be something different around Agni’s Philosophy, which will be presented on, perhaps, different platforms than those which have been used before,” Merceron told FFDream.

Asked if that meant it wouldn’t be running on PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, Merceron teased, “I can tell you that it will not run only on PC!”

It is widely believed Sony and Microsoft will reveal their next generation consoles during or before next year’s E3.

Separately, Merceron touched a bit upon Final Fantasy Versus XIII. He said the team developing the title has “huge ambitions,” and that the moment it’s revealed, “people will be very happy to have been patient.”

I take that as a "iPad 6 at next E3 confirmed" ;).

More likely for PS4 or Wii U.

Lightning Reborn: Final Fantasy.

Versus XIII cancelled to make way for this new exciting game.

Uff. But really, I'm hoping for some damn good news about Versus by E3.

i'd almost forgot about FFV13

Is this a game engine?

But didn't Swuare Enix announce that they had licensed Unreal Engine 4 recently?

It's a tech demo for the Luminous engine and yea SE are the first confirmed to license UE4 (I believe Epic announced that), but well the company is quite big by now, so there is no telling if this license is for their japanese branch or maybe for their western teams that might just be more adapted to UE by now.

As much as the tech demo is very impressive, I suspect that the game will be able to run on some very modest hardware ...

The core techical feature of next generation game engines (in my opinion) is probably advanced level of detail systems that are (probably) heavily dependent on tessellation. There are two reasons for this, this makes it far easier to scale games to run on hardware with wide ranges of capabilities (produce a game that can run on the current HD consoles while showing off the capabilities of bleeding edge PCs), and (since you're not wasting processing power displaying details people can't see) it allows you to use the processing power to display more detail that people will notice.

To use the HD consoles as a benchmark, if you split the scene into (roughly) 3 equal parts based on the processing power used and evaluated the near, middle and far 1/3 of details you would (probably) find that the near 1/3 could see substantial improvements from increased detail, the middle 1/3 only saw modest improvements from increased detail, and the far 1/3 saw no improvement from increased detail. Now, hypothetically speaking, if you have an advanced LOD system in place you can direct most of the improvements in processing power to that near 1/3 and (effectively) get a much larger impact than you would have previously been able to get from a similar performance jump.

While I have no doubt that the tech demo is running on very high end hardware, and results like that are probably out of reach to the Wii U, PS3 and XBox 360, I wouldn't be too surprised if any game based on them could be released on all three platforms; and the Wii U version could see some of the advantages of tessellation on increased noticeable detail.

I'd love to see more of that demo or something similar. It was quite beautiful!
