It seems to me like Xbox 360 is both the least commercially successful and the most financially successful console of this generation. It never ceases to amaze me that Microsoft has been able to make a profit after losing billions on the Red Ring of Death.

This exactly is what determines success and both was very profitable.  Between XBLA, XBL, Kinect, Software, and hardware who knows who made the most profits.  I would say Xbox but because of the rrod id say the wii has been the most profitable.

The Wii has been so profitable that it isn't even a contest. On the flipside, the PS3 has lost so much money that there isn't any contest for "least profitable system" either. The Wii is far ahead of the 360. The PS3 is far behind the 360.

I completely agree with you 100%

You think Live isn't free for nothing? Wow.

Not exactly. I think it's not free primarily because they sell it in the US, they charge for it because they can given they are focused on a localized market.

they can charge for chat and they can charge for services. even the brand new wiiu is not really focused on cross game chatting because they are going for a global appeal and that is not a major selling point for their market

No idea what you're implying here. What have the prices of games to do with this thread now.
Also judging your last post, you forget that European games already include tax, which is around 20% in Europe.

I'm saying that xbox owners buy more games because they are for the most part in the US and their market is far more appealing (cheaper).

I'm gonna insist, even the last gen tie ratios ( 11.01 for Xbox, 10.66 for PS2 ) do kinda show that it's a region thing. what it says is that the US is a stronger (and more appealing) market. as i said your day one price of 60 bucks (45 euros) is a pipe dream for us.

And I'm from Europe, so I know what you're saying.
Still our games already include tax. 60€ games are 48€ without tax versus a 60 dollar game (45€). Wow 3€ difference.

Now if you're European you can easily get your games from the UK, which are far cheaper than the games in the US or mainland Europe.
Usually 50€ or less (including 10€ tax) and free shipping costs. That's 40€ compared to the 45€ Americans pay.

The X360 is the most successful console of the gen, as consumers got more games and therefore satisfaction from it than they did any other console.

This also shows that people enjoyed Wii games the most, as less games were needed to satisfy the needs of the Wii gamer.

Very qestionable measure of success, especially when the ratios are so close.

good post

What I wouldn't give to hear you say that about me.  :(

Now this is an OP that can generate a lot of responses.

The one thing I'd like to add is that I believe the 360's advantage in tie ratio and thus higher satisfaction among console owners can be credited to the superiority of the Forza series over the Gran Turismo games.

Or this thread, BY ITSELF, will set VGC's server's aflame in a blaze of anger and friction.

But onto the topic, I'm surprised at how low the DS and PSP's tie-ratios are. I expected higher.

For the main consoles, good for the 360 to have such a high number. It's fun console with some great games. However, considering how bloody chaotic the gaming industry actually is now, Sony and Microsoft could tank next gen, replaced by the Apple iGamestation and the Samsung...Thingy. You just can't predict anything anymore.

Now I want a game console called the Thingy!  The Playstation Thingy would sell like hotcakes.  Also the Nintendo Thingy sounds good for their next handheld.

So much for its success, when it sees itself in a diminished image of selling far poorly in Japan in comparison to its HD Twin.

Apparently, hardware sales, software sales, and profits mean absolutely nothing. Tie ratio is all that matters. Good to know.

So to summarize what is going on in this thread:

The Wii prints money.
360 is a good strategic victory.
At least PS3 sells well in Japan.
Nobody cares because downloadable games are the future, and the future is now.

You do realise that the tie in ratio is the hardware to software sale ratio, so they take BOTH into account :(
