Haven't played for ages, but this is good starting point if you're completely new - http://www.wizards.com/dnd/Feature.aspx?x=new/learntoplay
This one is also very useful - http://www.d20srd.org/
You can also find lot of downloadable PDFs on net (wink, wink).
Though, best thing would be to find good DM - D&D is quite complex, so that would help a lot. Plus, make sure you research stuff for a bit, there's lot of people out there passionately hating 4th edition and playing by older rules.
That said, you might want to look in some easier systems for start - I find FUDGE, which is quite light on rules, very easy to understand and get it going - plus you don't need to buy specialized dice if you don't want to, you can easily make them from standard d6 (six-sided dice) http://www.fudgerpg.com/
GURPS is also very good and popular system (original Fallout was to be based on it, but due to some legal issues they had to change it to internally developed SPECIAL which quite heavily borrows from GURPS) http://www.sjgames.com/gurps/
I used to play the Swedish equivalent: Drakar & Demoner (Dragons & Demons) way back when :P
This was one of the official worlds : http://www.alvione.com/rollspelsmuseum/museum/target/dod/grafik/14-604.jpg and here http://www.erebaltor.se/kartor/Ereb_prog5small.jpg you got a fan made map of the same world
awesome times indeed
I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!
Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.
I love it! I am looking for people to play since ages, because my old group split up and moved to completely different places. Sadly Jcannot tell you much about on how to play, but having a good gamemaster normally makes a good game.

Well I just thought it up actually. It could really work. Google hangout is a video conference tool that enables multiple video conferences simultaneously. It's just like sitting at a table together but online :)) * I may go brush up on dnd *

I've played D&D, Call of Chtulu, and Pathfinder.
Pen & Paper > console and computer RPG, IMO
D&D got worse after 3.5 so if you want to play that, look for used 3,5 books.
Pathfinder is excellent. It's like a more modern version of 3.5.
What you need to get started is the main rule book, and maybe a monster manual. Additional books helps.
If you don't have dice, there is a web page with electronic RPG dice you can use if you don't mind having a laptop on the table while playing.
I LOVE ICELAND!

^Oh, and about 4-5 other people to play with is optimal.
I LOVE ICELAND!

Yes but it only works when you are young and have lots of enthusiasm and a strong imagination. When I became an adult I couldn't do pen and paper RPGs anymore, I simply needed the visual help that video games offer.

Same thing happened to me, only with masturbation.
OT: If you use a premade setting, I suggest Dark Sun or Ravenloft. Those two always kicked ass.
