Forums - General - Games Journalism at its most corrupt?

Update: The editor that made the cuts has blogged about his decision and his regret at having to remove the content from the original article:

This post on GAF rounds up everything on the topic:

This seems to have taken off on Gaf. This article summarises the first half:

http://www.cinemablend.com/games/Eurogamer-Writer-Fired-Pointing-Out-How-Much-Video-Game-Journalism-Fails-48600.html

Basically, Robert Florence wrote an article for Eurogamer questioning the close relationship between video games journalists and in his original article he quoted some Twitter comments from games journalist Lauren Wainwright. Apparently, MCV (who Lauren works for) complained, (rumoured to have threatened legal action) got the quotes removed but have also forced Rob Florence out of Eurogamer:

The edited article can be found here:

All of that is by itself pretty bad but not surprising. I've questioned games "journalism" for a long time and my personal opinion is that most of the journalism is simply enthusiast media (which is essentially just extra PR for publishers). However, MCV's response seems to have only fanned the flames.

Part 2 of the story is the other horrible side of the games industry; mass gamer rage! Gamers have now bombarded Lauren's twitter account with a torrent of abuse to the point that she's now in virtual hiding. Much as I disagree with her, this is a bit much.

Seriously, how immature is our industry? What do you guys think of all this?

I think she deserves it. How immature is she that she did that to the guy when he was just posting facts from what I can see?

Two wrongs don't necessarily make a right though. The immaturity of gamers is just as bad.

Was it actually her complaining or her bosses? The article I posted suggests it was guys higher up getting the comments removed.

God damn it. I agree with Rol. Now to go and reflect on it.

It will take a long time before gaming journalists can be at the same level as movies or music journalists. Like Rol said, too much fanboyism involved in the media. That doesn't mean the other entertainment medias aren't "corrupted", but it's definitely less than the gaming media. Hopefully one day all journalist in the entertainment can be at the same level.

Nintendo and PC gamer

Damn Eurogamer for firing this hero. Now I have to boycot Eurogamer.

It's really a sad industry, gaming journalism. Such lack of integrity and treating us gamers like dumb sheep.

It's a fucking joke, frankly, and the fallout really just helps prove Florence's point.

People are castigating Eurogamer but I'm sure they were under huge pressure from great big bullies and I can understand them backing down, even if it is disappointing and there doesn't seem to have been anything particularly libellous in the article, at least not to my untrained eye anyway. At least they gave Florence the platform in the first place, hard to imagine IGN, gamespot or any of those shithouses doing the same. I'll keep an eye out for his name in future anyway.

As for the rage directed at Wainwright, what's new? I'm sure it was pretty gross but it's very difficult to feel sorry for her in any of this. Is the abuse really any worse than other areas of journalism? I'm thinking of football fans, Christopher Nolan fans, the Daily Mail website etc. Not that that excuses it, I just don't know whether it's specific to the games industry, although i didn't see any of the comments as her twitter account is now closed.

And why aren't there more comments on this?

They didn't fire him, he quit, apparently without any bad blood towards Eurogamer (according to his twitter account anyway)

Gamers themselves (those who post on the internet) are for the most part brats who think they are educated while they blindly move in herds to buy the next hyped game.

Rol getting away with insulting the entire VGC without getting banhammer.

His position was made untennable and he had no real choice if he wanted to retain any self-respect. You can't carry on working for a business that forces substantial edits on your work due to unreasonable pressure and threats from outside. The piece was an expose on the seedy underbelly of gaming journalism, the purpose of an expose is to shine a light on bad stuff that;s been going on. To have some of the substance of an expose removed is as close to showing someone the door as you can get.
