human nature requires motivation to take interest in an action.

in video games, story is often times the motivator. you could be playing for points or k/d ration or whatever but most games use story.

I'd say its actually the opposite for most games. Or at least the most successful games. For me, motivation isn't k/d ratio, it's just having fun with the gameplay. When I play a game, I rarely think abot the plot behind it.

So what are these most successful games which don't have points/achievements/story?

Most Nintendo games go gameplay first over story/points. And even many of the most successful HD games are too.

With a few exceptions (Zelda is most obvious to me) I don't care about story at all. I am a child of the 80s. I play games for fun, and read books for stories.

For example, even in a largely story based game like the GTA series, I just skip the cut scenes and do the missions. I do not care at all about what is happening to the character.

I tend to watch GTA cutscenes but not for the story though. They're oftentimes just plain hilarious.

So you prefer pointing vaguely to something which only you seem to know, instead of giving names to the games.

That's for the developers to decide. There's a reason I'm not a story writer; my creativity sucks and any story I imagine will suck as well. Same goes for any game series.

Pretty much any Nintendo game; Wii sports, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, 2D Mario, 3D Mario. And most HD games, especially online games; Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Battlefield, Skyrim, FIFA, all fighting games, all racing games, etc. These all use fun gameplay over points/achievements/kd-ratio as the main motivations to play the game.

Well what would you like to know about Kratos that you already don't know? I'm going to use Mass Effect as an example.  It is pretty popular and they've already announced a 4th installment.  They don't need to use Shephard because the universe is huge and a lot of story can be told in that universe.  God of War on the other hand is just about some angry dude who wants to kill the gods.  He didn't have the chains until the first God of War game so a prequel to God of War would have to take place during the war that he fought to get those blades.  Before then he is just a mortal without blades.  There isn't anythng left to tell of Kratos.  If they make a sequel, what would it be about, unless somehow Zues and some of the other gods survived.  it would be like making a sequel to Gears of War 3.  I love gears and they left things unanswered but if they made a 4th it would be kind of hard to justify it because they've already killed the locust.  They are able to make prequels because there is a 14 year span from E-Day to gears of war 1 but a sequel wouldnt make sense (Although Judgement looks like complete garbage).  If you want a different mythology and different character they should just change the name and keep the same gameplay element.  They can always do a reboot years down the road as it is ery popular and it is fun.

While a lot of people play God of War for it's best in the genre gameplay, more people play for the story and characters. I love everything about God of War equally, the visuals, gameplay, story and sound are all top notch which is why the games totally own the genre in everyway by such a massive margin.

Do you really think God of War could have amassed a dedicated fan group this big: https://www.facebook.com/godofwar.page?fref=ts if it were just great hacking and slashing game with no purpose to play, I doubt it. People love Kratos, people love Greek Mythology and they love the twists Sony Santa Monica imposed onto it. The story is what makes millions of people want to keep playing through the games whilst the gameplay keeps them addicted.

And for a franchise that you think nobody should or does care for its story, it sure did well in this competition http://www.g4tv.com/vgdm/best-video-game-story-2012/, 2nd place only to Mass Effect.

I've got an idea I wrote on a forum somewhere, bear with me while I try to find it and I'll edit this post with what I think they could or should do post-God of War III.

Yeah definitely haha  I'd love to hear something they could do.  The only thing I could think of is somehow zues surviving.

I don't even care about GoW's story so you're asking the wrong person. Also, there is a new game in development so you don't have to wait long to see if the story makes sense or doesn't make sense. I think Kratos is going to have a time-traveling ability, but we'll have to wait and see how it works out.
