I really need to look into this. So in the new smash bros 1 player does what, while the other does what? I really dont get it. Or COD. Does one drive aircraft while another is on foot?
Mario Kart, 1 throwing items, 1 driving etc?
I'll have a look at it all properly tonight.
I must admit, Im very concerned and shocked by all this actually. Im not sure how Call Of Duty and Mario Kart etc will work with multiplayer that way.

It's a bit different than that
In Mario Kart the Gamepad (or 2 Gamepads at that point in time) could be used to increase the number of players: 4 people playing on the TV (using Pro Controllers or Wiimotes) and 1 or 2 playing on their Gamepad.
In Call of Duty you can play 2 player co-op full screen with one person playing on the TV screen and the other one on the Gamepad.
Smash Bros would work like this: Play on the TV with the camera zooming in and out (same as always, camera zooming far out on big stages to show every character) or on the Gamepad with the camera following you (no need to worry about things getting too small on screen)
Then there's games like Nintendo Land which use the controller for asymmetric gameplay: In Mario chase the person with the Gamepad hides from the other players and can see the whole map on the Gamepad screen while the other 4 players walk through the stage in 3rd person view and need to find the person using the Gamepad. It's basically "Player X can see something the other players can't".
So what the Gamepad can do (depending on the game of course) is this:
- Allow more than 4 players to play simultaneously
- Play Co-op with one screen per player
- Asymmetric gameplay
- Stop people from cheating in versus matches by looking at your screen
- Play a game while the TV is turned off
Most devs will be smart enough to implement the Gamepad wisely (at least in this regard... we'll get lots of "touch the screen for gimmick" stuff)
Other than that you can use all your Wiimotes, Nunchuks, Classic Controllers (and CCP), the Balance Board, Zapper, etc. to play on the Wii U. So it's actually really cheap to get 4 controllers - if you own a Wii you can continue to use your old stuff and don't need to buy new Wiimotes or anything.
