Everyone knew this for a long time now. Hopefully the remaining doubters will begin accepting the fact that iPhones, Andriod phones, Windows phones and tablets all are gaming devices as well.

But not in direct competition. This argument has been held countless times, and yet the obvious analogy has not been enough to quiet the skeptics.

doesn't really matter if they are in "direct" compitition.  if someone buys a smartphone or ipod or tablet and that affects a purchase decision for a dedicated gaming device...  that compitition errodes the market. 

anyhoo, losses aren't that big in the lead up to the wiiU launch.  i'm sure there is a lot of money tied up in R&D and manufaturing right now.  the real test will be to see nintedo's finacials after the wii U launch.  they need to be at least someone profitable in the next 2 quarters i would think to turn around their stock price.

The 3DS was poised to fall behind the DS regardless of a downward adjustment to Nintendo's forecast. It's a red ocean product, so it was never going to have an explosive growth phase like the DS.

What speaks in favor of the 3DS though is that it could very well have a longer tail than the DS, thus eventually ending up with similar lifetime sales. This will depend a lot on what third parties will do in the coming years.

Oh so it will fall behind DS? Do you think we will get graphs from Ninty? It's funny seeing all this handhelds are doomed talk when the 3DS still outshipped everything, including the fantastic selling home consoles.

So that's basically the past two quarters I guess.  Wow, didn't realize DS was so dead outside of Japan and America.


If you look at how relatively close the numbers are for NA for the 3DS and the DS, tells me the market wasnt really ready for the 3DS and that if the XL wasnt released, the numbers closer still.
