doesn't really matter if they are in "direct" compitition. if someone buys a smartphone or ipod or tablet and that affects a purchase decision for a dedicated gaming device... that compitition errodes the market.
anyhoo, losses aren't that big in the lead up to the wiiU launch. i'm sure there is a lot of money tied up in R&D and manufaturing right now. the real test will be to see nintedo's finacials after the wii U launch. they need to be at least someone profitable in the next 2 quarters i would think to turn around their stock price.
