Call me late to the party, but as we approach the launch of Nintendo's next home console, its name has been increasingly bugging me. I mean, it's called Wii U... No, seriously, Nintendo's upcoming video game console is called "WE, YOU"! What the hell kind of name is that for a video game console??? Do they want to make gamers feel uncomfortable, or even ashamed about their purchases? I mean, just imagine the conversations people will be having:

- I got an awesome Playstation 4 last christmas. It has fucking badass features all over it. What about you?

- Well, I got a Wii U. It has this sweet tab-

- Wait, say that again.

- ...what, Wii U?

- BWAHAHAHAHA!!!

***

- Look mom, a Wii U! I WANT IT!

- You already have a Wii. You should be more grateful for what you have.

- But mom, it's a brand new console!

- Oh yeah? WELL I JUST BOUGHT YOU A "BRAND NEW" iPHONE 5!

Really, Nintendo? Is this the kind of reactions you want from potential consumers?

Or maybe the absolute ridiculousness of its name is there to hide a subliminal message? "Oh my God! What message could that possibly be???", I can hear you ask. So let's give it a few shots, shall we:

"Wii love U"? - Well, as heartwarming as that may seem at first glance, of course they love us. We provide them with money, after all.

"Wii will let U down"? - That also makes sense. The Wii's final years was a huge letdown, as proven by its declining sales.

"There is Wii and then there is U"? - Wow, that's a new side from Nintendo that we haven't seen before. Pure racist- and bullying mentality.

"Wii'd like U to stop whining"? - Remember Operation Rainfall? Well, so does Nintendo.

The speculations are Endless! But the question remains: Why on Earth would Nintendo go with the name "Wii U" *shivers*, even when excellent non-confusing names such as... Wii 2 are available? Why would they choose not to be taken seriously?

What do you think? Did Nintendo make the right choice here, or did they just shoot themselves in the foot with a shotgun?

I think they should of named it something different to give it a real identity over the Wii.

Should've called it Wii 2(We too)

Should of called it P00

It pretty accurately defines the system; Wii (4 motion controllers) and U (the single Gamepad). It's a pretty accurate described of a system which takes the Wii local multiplayer/social philosophy, and adds in the "you" - "Wii U" basicly covers that and the asymmetrical philosophy.

Whether the name sounds good or not is subjective. Personally, I find that "Vita" sounds like some sort of cheap Italian lunch wrap. Whereas Playstation and Nintendo Entertainment system make the most sense for a videogame system out of anything I can think of. Xbox, what is that supposed to mean? Xtreme Box? Spelled to sound like some hip 1995 deodorant, cologne, and aftershave box set aimed at 14 year olds?

GameCube is pretty direct, but I also think it sounds kind of like the name of a children's toy. Nintendo 64 and Xbox 360 more or less just added big numbers to existing names to make them sound more advanced than just adding an incremental number beside them.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

To be honest, I don't care all that much about the name of my console the same way I don't care about the name of my car. It could be called ''poopy face tomato nose'' and I would'nt care.

That being said, It's true that the name doesn't sound as cool as ''Xbox'' or ''Playstation'' in a conversation with friends, but Wii sounded so dumb before launch, then it became mainstream and no one was ashamed of saying the word ''wii'' in a sentence.

At first it was going to be called "DirectX box" (I'm sure you can work out why), and then that got shortened to just "Xbox".

I think like I thought with wii and kinect. I laugh at how stupid it sounds then it sinks in as normal.

One more thing to complete my year = senran kagura localization =D

what's in a name?

You'll get used to it. Everyone got used to "Wii".

The only time I find it funny is when I hear Iwata say it like "Weee yuUU"
