I honestly can't believe all the bitter comments from obvious anti-Apple folk, it's unreal. It's like the old Spectrum vs Commodore all over again.

When a company sits on top of the world like Apple currently does, everyone (extremely lofty stock analyst, direct competitors, rabid fanboy, jealous foreign governments, etc etc) gun after you.  Its Pretty sad

I agree that the Nexus 7 does have a better screen resolution and has 1Gb RAM compared to 512MB on the iPad mini...but in fact the A5 with built in custom GPU is more powerful than the Tegra 3.  The OS is down the individual, but the concensus is that iOS is better than Android....the only mobile OS that comes close and is getting really good is WP.  I hate all the clone OS provided by Android.  Don't get me wrong, the Nexus 7 is a decent machine at a great price...but with regards to sales, there will be no contest.  What you may be forgetting is, who really wants to do Multitasking using a tablet?  The general tablet audience don't want to do that.  Yeah it would be nice, but what are you gonna do on a tablet that requires great multitasking?

Actually quick question?  Do you own a Nexus 7 by any chance?  Or some other tablet?

What exactly makes iOS better than the latest Android OS? You say multitasking doesn't matter, but what DOES matter so much that makes iOS better?

It is a beautiful app launcher of an operating system. It offers nothing more than android at the moment. It is easier for older crowd to use. I think that is about it.

I have years of iOS experience behind me and got an Android device a month or so ago (Nexus 7) and Android just feels like it's the better OS. You can do more with it, but it's all there right from the start if you don't want to do more. I checked the Play Store and there were more than enough apps to choose from. Most of the stuff on both stores is fluff, anyway. The most important apps are all there.

Best of all, you don't need iTunes to use it with a PC.

Same here Pezus. Got rid of my Iphone 3g for Samsung Galaxy S2. I am liking the easy method of loading files onto the devices. Obviously it is big jump for me coming from an older device but even comparing it 4S. I do agree that play store is very much comparable to app store. Downloaded pretty much all the apps i had on ios to my new android phone. It just seems like a more competent device.

Two new facts about the iPad mini:

1. Despite having a 50% larger screen, it is thinner and lighter than any of the 7" competition.

2. Apparently it can get away with such a narrow bezel because the screen rejects accidental thumb presses. I'm always skeptical of "smart" software solutions like this, but if it works, it means a smaller device without reduced usability.

Oh dear god. Some of the stuff you spouted earlier was bad but this takes the cake. What is it with Apple. No one can be neutral with them. Either love them or hate them but whichever side you are on, you can't see it. Stop defending them so much. You will realize people stop hating them as much then since you wont be fanning the flames.

Okay show me the neutrality in the discussions that I've been having today.  I've seen nothing but anti-Apple comments apart from one positive about Apps.

So what exactly did I spout earlier that was bad?

The difference is familiarity and ease of use.  iOS has pretty much been the same OS for over 5 years now.  Android is difference because every product developer has effectively made their own templated OS that sits on top of Android.  Multitasking matters to some, but not all.  We are talking the full OS experience which includes Apps.  Because every company and their mother wants to use Android but build their own wee design on top effectively changing the way the OS looks and feel makes a very uneven environment for users.  And in short their is very little brand loyalty with regards to mobile phones (other than Apple).  I hope it would change, and maybe it will with WP8 but I doubt it.  One other problem is updateability.  Tell me of one phone or tablet that will allow you significant OS updates throughout a 3 year lifespan.  The problem you have is being able to cope with the Android update first and foremost, then the layered Software update from the specific Company your product comes from.

My iPad 1 was delivered with iOS 3.2 and was progressively upgraded to iOS 5.1.1 over a 2 year lifespan.  Unfortunately it was deemed not powerful enough for iOS 6 released in September 2012.

Thankfully none of the problems you mention apply if you get a tablet from Google

I hope that becomes true with Google tablets and we will to see if Google apply this to the Nexus range.

Well the Mini seems overpriced considering the price of the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD. Looks like a fairly pointless addition to the tablet line considering they're placing it in direct competition with Nexus7 & Fire HD but with relatively comparable hardware for a much higher price.

I agree that the price of the iPad mini ($329) is slightly pricey, but all things considering, people tend to pay a premium for a premium product.  After extensively looking at the competitors on the market ie Nexus 7 and Fire HD, it is blatantly obvious that the iPad mini is overall a better product.  It has a better OS, better Processor, extra 5MP camera and is overall a better build (according to analysts).  All in all, I reckon the iPad mini will sell like hotcakes and WILL be the must have tablet this Xmas.

The OS is completely subjective (I for instance much prefer vanilla Android to iOS) and the processor is comparable to the chips in both the Fire HD and N7. The Tegra3 in the N7 also has the advantage that a lot of game devs optimise visuals (extra effects) due to extra support from NVidia. That's not even mentioning the larger but lower res screen. Weren't retina displays supposed to be Apple's major selling point?

It realy isn't a premium product. It's a comparable and overpriced tablet that's been wrapped in premium marketing and style.

One thing we can agree on though is that it will sell. What I think will be interesting is the sales ratio between the iPad Mini and new 4th gen iPad considering they aren't that far apart in price, yet the new iPad absolutely destroys the Mini in specs.

It applies to pretty much any Nexus device. Google keep them updated and using vanilla Android.

I agree too.  What is even more confusing is that the iPad mini is selling at $329, while the iPad 2 comes in at $399.  I see no reason why anyone would opt for the iPad 2 at all seeing as the iPad mini has a slighter better spec compared to the iPad 2 albeit with a smaller physically screen and body.  What I do think will happen is that noone will buy the iPad 2 at all.  I fully expect the iPad mini to sell out WW within the week with no new stock until January.  Also the iPad 4 will see huge sales as well, as there is talk that a huge number of iPad 3's are being traded or sold to allow for the new iPad 4.  We will see.

Yes Retina Screens are Apple's new selling point, but I totally understand why the iPad mini doesn't have one.  Apple needed to totally distinguish the difference between an iPad mini and a proper iPad....and if they gave the mini a Retina screen, that would have totally burned proper iPad sales.

My mention of Premium product is in relation to the product build.  Apple has notoriously made beautiful products using excellent materials generally, and normally with that comes a higher price tag although sometimes the actual technology may not be as good as the cheaper alternative.  Again it is to do with style as well (you mentioned this). There is a high percentage of people that would rather have a sleek well made iPad than a clunkier, cheaper build comparable tablet, even if it was significantly cheaper.

I agree. They really do make quality hardware both inside and out. I never personally liked iMac that much but the new one is just so damn gorgeous. The amount of attention they put towards aesthetics has inspired other companies to focus on that too. Microsoft Surface seems like a good hardware piece. Also the first DS Lite in white could have been inspired by the Apple design language.
