Forums - Sony - Did us PS+ subscribers help fund the new PSN Store redesign?

Does anybody have any info on how many subscribers there are?

Assuming there's 1 million it's made $50-100 million just off subscription fees.

But how much of that is now owed to publishers and developers who's games were offered for free or discounted? Naturally its a debt that will continue to build throughout the year as sony offer more deals and free games. PS Plus is a strange one, definitely value for the consumer though,  I became a member at the begining of this month.

I don't see how any of those free games offered to PS+ subscribers can make people not buy more recently released games.

I'm Thinking about getting AC3 and Dishonored because of the discounts I get for being a PS+ subscriber.

I doubt third parties get much money for their games available on PS+.

Most of those games are very old.  Sony is not offering games that are still selling well at retail like UC3 or GT5.

In fact the majority of games available for PS+ subscribers are made by studios owned by Sony.

PS+ is not a smartest thing Sony ever did, it's actually a bad strategy. It's too valuable for the subscription rate gamers pay. Those free games PS+ members get will steal time and essentially cause members to buy less games that aren't discounted.

Also there's this non-beneficial psychology involved, lots of people will hold off from buying new games they have had their eyes on because they are hoping these games will be free on PS+. This is especially true for typical PSN games.

I can only go to myself and attest that it works like this. Being a member I simply refuse to buy anything that's full price on PSN.

All in all PS+ is great for gamers but not great for Sony.

I Agree, I think the best way for PS Plus to work is with a monthly subsdcription, maybe providing you with plus points you can then use to purchase games. The Plus points can be redeemed when you delete a game, so its still technically an unlimited games collection but  it will put people off downloading every single game they can get their hands own, thus limiting the damage to actual game sales whilst still providing a valuable service. Of course the subscription fee would mean they would have to offer a more robust and update line up of free games.

I think they should try this 1st with the Vita, offer the system on a 12month contract for $79 for the initial payment (excluding memory cards) and a $30 or so monthly fee which includes  "unlimited game collection". WIth Gaikai on board there are so many possibilties with what they could do in regards to a premium online service.

I love your points idea. It would be fun to have a set amount of points to purchase these free games and discounts with and really have to think what you get instead of just going "what the hell, I'll download them all lol".

I believe it was hinted that the publishers who put their games on PS+ for free get paid depending on how much it's downloaded

PS+ is imho a stroke of genius (at least it's current model) by Sony. It's very impressive given how stupid some of their choices have been in recent years.

In the long run it is great for Sony as well. It is a great promotional tool. If gamers enjoy let's say Borderlands 1, they'll be more likely to pick up Borderlands 2 dow the road.

I HIGHLY doubt Sony is paying these publishers to offer these games for free.......this is more like a promotional tool as I have said above. It benefits both Sony and the 3rd parties.

Sony using the money from Playstation Plus to redesign the SEN store? That would be like needing home repairs and using the extra money to get your car painted!! The new store looks nice but there may have been better things that money could have been used for.

if that is the case, maybe if they get more subscribers, they will re-design the XMB :D

Most of the full priced games are either not the complete version (GOTY w/ all DLCs) and also they are usually old 2-3 yrs. So if you dont have those games by now u probably did not plan to buy in the first place, so i dont think it hurt sales.

PSN discounted games, yah u were not going to buy them in the first place if you did not have PSN+, everyone with PSN + ended up spending more money than before they got PSN +.

So it is a good idea for 2 reasons
1. Total amount of money u spend on PSN + is more than someone who do not have PSN+ bc u dont want to let a good deal slide eventhough u were only moderately interested in a game.

2. You gave Sony 50 dollar that u would not have otherwise, so they kept ur 50 bucks for a year and they ahve that money to invest.
