I would argue that the relative standard of living before the introduction of welfare and/or minimum wage was roughly equal to what we have seen since then; and I would suggest that the introduction of the welfare state has made things substantially worse for the poor. If you look at the Gini coefficient since the end of World War 2 in the United States, you will notice that inequality really began to increase after the introduction of the welfare state
