Forums - Politics - Who won the debate? Biden or Ryan?

Who won the debate?

Vice President Joe Biden 218 52.03%

Congressman Paul Ryan 123 29.36%

Nobody/Tie 73 17.42%

Total:414

I find it fascinating how close our poll is to CBS's poll. Does that mean we have a fairly good sampling here on this site?

Everyone just says "both sucked". What is a good debate then?
In two elections on vgc, I have not seen one debate called "good"

One of the Bush/Kerry debates was good on both sides... i forget which though.

I thought the "Lock box" debate was a good one for Gore/Bush even though Gore later got hammered about it.

It's funny how quickly republicans and democrats switched on that issue.

But what's the qualification of it being good?

Talks about important issues?
THe candidate(s) do(es) really well?
The backdrop?

Mostly the second for me... but really all 3 fit.

The Candidates both did a good job of talking about their vision and articulating their plans while having disagreements over policy issues.

The Democratic Primaries for the 2004 election were like this as well.

Of the four people in the debates so far... the only one who really gave any sort of an idea about what he wanted to do with the presidency was Mitt Romney... and he was sketchy about some of the details.

I guess I see what you mean. I'm not geared toward that specific thing.

I'm guessing it's like studying cinematography. You notice types of shots, rules, balance etc. And then when you see a movie, you can really see what the director was articulating, and how it works with the movie.

That's a good way to put it.

I'd say a good debate is much like two friends argueing about the politics and certain issues.  Polite, but not afraid to take each other to task, agreeing a lot, and both acknowledging they want to do good even if they think the other person is misguided.

A bad debate, is like two friends argueing about politics after a few bottles of liquor.  This debate was sort of like that.

It's all going to depend on how Biden is taken.

I think it should give Obama a bump.  People say "Nobody likes a bully" but that's actually not true.  Lots of people like bullys.

Bullys are often popular.

Ryan could of countered it by being more forceful, but I think he came off kind of meek.  Not unprepaired like Obama... but generally meek and unwilling to challenge things.

Joe Smoked Ryan. This will push the bump back in dems favor. The abortion question just won the woman in the middle.

interesting, cnn has a poll out with Ryan at 48% and Biden at 44%. Basically equal.

I don't really agree with that, I think Biden dominated the debate. However, maybe the Biden interruptions had more of an impact on other people. Biden's demeanor wasn't very good for sure...

I don't think it will push the bump back, but it might halt it's movement.  VP's don't matter that much.  Also, I don't think abortion question will do much at this stage, I think the campaigns are pretty well established on that issue.

I agree Biden won though.

Because there are very few centrists on VGC. You either have scorched-earth libertarians or fire-breathing socialists (yo), who aren't going to be satisfied with what was said.

It could be possible that he was coached to go easy on Biden, lest the media pick it up in a "bullying an old man" sort of way.

I just didn't like this environment... more discussion style less debate style.

Yeah that put me off too, at times it felt like a typical Sunday morning political talk show with both guys talking over each other instead of an actual debate that features both candidates behind podiums on the stage.  The moderator did a decent job overall, but at times she was almost like a third commentator or host like you see in the aformentioned political talkshows.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

lol cnn sold their souls for hits.
They're literally the worst station in terms of politics.

They were just saying yesterday that the benghazi situation was a massive coverup by the president. lol. Yeah, that's what people do when they fuck up, they cover it up, but it's not the president, it's the people directly in charge. It's like Biden said, 'that's why there is an investigation'.

I did not watch the debate and voted Biden because I am a dirty, hippy socialist that would never agree with a Republican. I seriously cannot understand how anybody would not know who they are voting for already. I guess I just am very opinionated and hardheaded like most people I know that actually vote.
