Forums - Sony - Could/would/are Sony dropping PS hardware altogether?

Could Sony do what I suggested below?

Yes 23 46.94%

No 26 53.06%

Sony's dropping dedicated gaming machines just like they're dropping DVD and Bluray players. I think Sony is just looking at things very differently now, hardware isn't gonna make them money, content will. I think of their gaming division as their movie division, everyone makes DVD players that can play their movies why not games? It's just this will take a bit of time.

It's possible that Sony could re-orient themselves towards the strength of their multimedia empire in lieu of hardware, and that phasing out of independent PlayStation hardware would be a part of this, but this day is a good 10 years off...

So they already have a 10 year plan.

They have a ten year plan for fucking everything. They probably have a ten year plan for their sd cards

sounds nice but i'm in doubt for many reasons, but the main one is, they'll always be a need for those games to become big budget releases.

you know. the difference in quality, control type, and playability.

the only thing this android, and windows thing is doing is as you've said. generating much needed profit.

I have already said this but I believe the PS4 will be the last playstation.

Just don't listen to selnor, he's a msft fan. End of story.

No we have the Sony guy officially saying Android and IOS and Windows. For this service. And debating the images of games available in the pictures released to promote this is like saying I can see the Ferrari but I'm not driving it.

I clearly see Killzone, God Of War and Little Big Planet.

Just because the service will be on mobile devices doesn't mean the service will offer every single game on those devices.

It seems like that wouldnt be a good business move. It would break up its userbase and considering the future looks more connected that wouldnt be a good idea in the long run. People would opt for other services that might be ccheaper or unified across platforms.

It would make no strategic sense to do this. Especially in the future. The brand would be bitesized in areas on certain devices trimming down the market and its presence for future years when this kind of service is only going to get more important not less.

It may serve them in te short term due to hardware butt would hurt them long term.

Regardless, we have no confirmation yet.

In 10-20 years perhaps all gaming will be from a streaming service, but I don't think Sony's gonna abandon the playstation brand just yet... If PS4 flops Gaikai will be an excellent service for them to focus on!! But PS4 ain't gonna flop that hard. No way.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Long term, perhaps.

Don't think 10 years will cut it. Make it 25.

Even if cloud gaming can become the staple for their 1st party and 3rd party gaming software it would be best for them to maintain their own form of hardware. By eliminating hardware they risk eliminating presence, especially if a move like that was done before the new service was firmly established in the consumer mind set. As long as they create hardware that they can sell to generate profits they should do so, providing their cloud services on everyone and their grandma's devices just add to their overall scope of market.

Software only would restrict their innovation to software, no longer could they utilize hardware innovation at least not without a dedicated machine that a firm number of people will be able to use. In addition physical products will need to still be made like controllers to play the games. Trying to provide accessories to dozens of different products is not going to be effective, and even if they are compatible certain products are not best utilized lugging a controller around. Also by creating hardware they can craft a device that best utilizes the service, as opposed to using an iPhone with a limited screen and terrible touch screen for most games and is required to use an external controller anyway for others.

That doesn't even touch the preferred market for physical games which will need to be catered to for some time. Not providing that option would be devastating to their business, though you might think as long as their profit margins are high enough it shouldn't matter. Problem is though, marketshare does matter. Marketshare creates product recognition and ensures third party support. If they were to forgo marketshare for profit, they might just end up with a whole lot less profit in the long run as they can't move the units to make up for being greedy profit margin maximizing corporate cronies. It would be shortsighted to think profit margins are a universal. There are many factors in place that lead to profits at the end of the day.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(
