Forums - Sony - Could/would/are Sony dropping PS hardware altogether?

Could Sony do what I suggested below?

With the latest news that Sony are goingg to be having their top exclusives accessable via Windows/Android and IOS could Sony never bring out another Playstation?

Think about this. Sony could incorporate every Sony Bluray player to have the software to run the streaming service. As it would require no extra Hardware apart from maybe a HDD. Thrown in with a controller. This would mean that Sony still makee money on selling more Bluray harrdware for films, and still play Sony games along with other  third parties?

Is this viable? Could this happen?

Sony have taken Huge steps  as they are known for their broad scope of exclusives among the industry. Effectively they are making te Playstation hardware a non exclusive console altogether surely. Although I firmly believe they would be better off profit wise by doing this.

No.
Internet speeds are nowhere near high enough for cloud gaming to become mainstream. Do I even need to mention bandwidth caps?

But profitwise it might make amazing sense.

Not having to R&D for a new PS. Not having to market that. Not having to sell at a loss. Not having to redesign the model. Not having to then do that all again te next time?

Surely even now if not accessable to everyone it is more profitable could they not do it?

After all business is the most important thing and they are in financial trouble.

It's possible that Sony could re-orient themselves towards the strength of their multimedia empire in lieu of hardware, and that phasing out of independent PlayStation hardware would be a part of this, but this day is a good 10 years off...

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

How about we actually wait for this news you're talking about to actually be announced before assuming stuff and asking questions that make us look bad?

So they already have a 10 year plan.

"Not having to market that" - They would still have to market the streaming service.
"Not having to sell at a loss" - They never have to do that. They decide just how advanced and costly a system will be.
"Not having to redesign" - If the above is handled better, this might not even be an issue. Look at the Wii.

I agree with the marketing comment. LOL what was I thinking.

But surely not having to design a new playstation and then make it for 10 years is gonna be alot more profitable. We already know Xbox Live makes way more money each year for MS than the 360 Hardware. Imagine not having to start Billions in the red each gen from designing the new system and then recoup costs through sales.
