Forums - Nintendo - Reggie Says Wii U Will Fend Off Next Xbox And PlayStation 4

Of course Reggie says this. I'm sure he likes his job.

Which is not to say he thinks WiiU is doomed, just that even if he did, he'd still be saying this.

He didn't say that for the Wii, for the Wii they had a whole different "We are not competing with them" spiel.

Good point.  And most of us ended up buying a Wii and a HD console so he was right in that regard.

WiiU does appear to be targeting 'core' gamers more than Wii did - maybe, Wii had a lot of 'core' titles in it's first year too.

If that's the case, then this is all we can expect Reggie to say.  Especially as there's nothing officially confirmed about the competition.

They'll need to get the Big 3rd party Games current/next gen bridge titles like Starwars 1313, Metal Gear: Ground Zero, Watchdogs and Bungie's "Desitny" before I believe this.

No they won't. Only a handful of..."gamers of a certain type" want those games to begin with.

I'm honestly not looking foward to MG:GZ or Watchdogs. Starwars and Bungie's Destiny may have potential though. Then again, Bungies is partnered up with neo Blizzard, and they made Diablo 3....

I say it, not based on personal taste but on how the "hardcore" gaming landscape was formed this generation. 3rd Party titles like Assasin Creed and Modern Warfare dominated. Although the above games may not be to your taste, the taste makers (the gaming media) are coining them the ones to look out for, what bigger titles have been announced for next winter/2014? Naturally these are likely to become the mass market games which the casual gamers will lean to.

WIthout these titles (or whatever the next big titles/franhcises are) on their platform there is no way Nintendo can "Fend Off" or compete with PS4/720, they will instead be forced to carve their on niche similar to the Wii. Thats not necessarily a bad thing, but as I don't feel the Wii U PAD has the same "Blue Ocean" appeal as the wii-mote it'll put nintendo in risk of underperforming.

what ever! WiiU has as much to prove as any console ever made. nice to know he's confident.

Well, Reggie says a lot of things. Great 3rd party support? I'm not so sure about that, still remains to be seen, we were waiting for that the entire 7th gen but it never came, despite the Wii devastating the competition. Its been made a whole lot easier for 3rd parties this time around but I can only think of the age-old expression; "where there's a will there's a way". 3rd parties never wanted to support the Wii, they perfectly well could have, and I have a feeling that even with the technical aspect being a lot simpler as far as multiplatform development goes, they simply won't pull out the big guns and give Nintendo their undivided attention.

I also think this statement means trouble; "Its based on having great graphics." Yeah, that sure worked for Nintendo in the past. The Wii U is more mainstream and forced than the Wii ever was and thus will never be able to attain the level of success it (Wii) had. Nintendo is simply trying to catch Sony and MS on tech and that tactic will end badly, especially when the others get around to releasing their own consoles.

There is nothing to suggest that the Wii U will be anywhere near as successful as the Wii. Will it able to fend of the next PS and X-box, though? Hard to say, we don't know what they're offering yet, nor do we know what the market will bring in the coming years and how it will change, also add in a possible fourth contender on the home console market as a wildcard and we know truly nothing.

samuship; I think that the Wii U will have a shorter life than the Wii, the Wii was the market leader from very early on, broke records and made Nintendo ridiculous amounts of money and they were still first out the gates with a replacement (like certain people predicted, the whole sales curve was foreseen by some). There's also the simple fact that the market keeps moving faster and is branching out, leading to all three console of the 8th gen having short lives, we'll never see PS2 level support ever again in the market.

The 3rd party support of the Wii U seems to be weak already IMO.
Late ports of Xbox 360 / PS3 games that are more than a year old won't do the trick.

Zombie U and Rayman are the only 3rd party titles that might have an impact and are really made for that console.
Bayonetta 2 was due to a payment from Nintendo, so I call it 2nd party.

I think the Wii U is keeping Xbox 360 and PS3 alive actually.

What about synchronized ports, would those satisfy you?

In other words, what would bolster 3rd party support on the Wii U in your eyes? More exclusives?

A GTA V announcement for example with some soft of exclusive DLC for Bioshock infinite, Far Cry 3 would have been nice as well.

Now we see Xbox 360 gets exclusive stuff for CoD, Tomb Raider and Resident Evil, while the PS3 gets exclusive stuff for Assassin's Creed 3 and FarCray 3.
Getting exclusive content for at least some games would show customers something like "Hey, next gen is here. The games you know are better on our console". Instead Nintendo fans cheer for late ports and hope that some of the newer games will be released.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Did you not see the Tekken Tag Tournament  2 video? It has exclusive modes and costumes catering to Nintendo fans.

Ninja Gaiden 3 for  WiiU has an additional playable character, apparently all the DLC and is a total overhaul.

Not sure what to say, did you look into what the U offers for synchronized multiplats? Already that's two cases off the top of my head.

You can ask for GTA V, and you can ask for Far Cry 3, but at least a portion of the multiplats is reason to cheer. Then there are exclusives only coming to the U (which you may not like but they are high-value: Bayo2, ZombiU, Wonderful101, Rayman Legends, Pikmin3, more) plus the extra U-only content for certain synchro and late multiplats.

Not sure what else to say, I mean it has a lot going for it. Sure, you can mention other multiplats is won't yet have, but that's a glass half full mentality when there is already much to cheer for imho.

All of this is still wait and see stuff.

GC and N64 were technically stronger, but for some reason the PS games always looked better and had more to offer. I think the carts could not hold as much on them.

"Looks better" is a matter of opinion. Design, translates into "looks better", not hardware strength.

Most PSX games relied heavily on CG and stills. What looked better were the CGI sprites and backgrounds. The pure 3D PSX games couldn't hold a candle to N64 games.

PS1 came out in 1994, N64 came out in 1996, it would be sad if N64 didn't have better graphics.

LOL WHAT? New super mario 2 sold faster then the original in the uk. How many times does it take to get through to people nintendo can live entirely on their own franchises. Nintendo are showing absolutely no sign in slowing down in software power.

@ Dirty it would look absolutely no different on ps4 and 360 2 though. What will 360 2 buyers cheer for? A late port of modern warfare 4? A port of bungie's multiplat xbox game?

What were vita fans cheering for? Marvel vs capcom? Ninja gaiden sigma? Metal gear solid hd? These are all ports.

One more thing to complete my year = senran kagura localization =D

The Wii U has more third party games for its launch than any console in history. How did you come to the weak 3rd party support conclusion?
