Forums - Nintendo - "no one is playing games on Wii" - Mike Goodman. "ROFFLE!!!" - My response

I chatted with a colleague of mine yesterday. She is a 50-year-old pathology laboratory manager, a very nice lady. We ended up talking about the video games (she asked me what I did during the holidays) and she said she got a Wii for herself and she got all excited about that.

She said she really likes Wii sport (who doesn't) and Ping Pong (what?), the fishing game (eeh?)..... None of the AAA titles on the Wii was mentioned. In fact, she hasn't even heard of SMG.

I believe a lot of rational members on this site may have seen this coming. Most of the Nintendo games will sell very well with a very long leg, just like their games on DS. After SSBB and MK, the "non Ninty fan" gamers may stop buying Wii games and start to focus more on PS3/Xbox360. The third party developers can only survive on Wii if they develop games that critics and most of us here think is "crap". Nintendo may end up be the only one making great games for Wii and they'd better come up some new IP soon enough.

I truly believe Nintendo is taking a different approach this time. I am really happy to see they put a smile on the people, the people who never play video games. For that regard, I think Nintendo has already won this generation.

Can Nintendo stay competitive next generation? Maybe not. But they will have a handful of CASH. They will use those cash to buy any technology and experience been accumulated this generation on PS3/Xbox360 for their next console and games. Sneaky, sneaky Nintendo.

It (PS3's market share) might hit 30%, but definently not more. ~ Neo

^ ah... we have a future purchaser of Wii Fit there.
the "ping pong" I assume is the laser hockey game in Wii play,... it's pretty cool, like air hockey.
fishing is also from Wii play. but I find that one a bit odd

Those are the people who are dragging the attach ratio down, though total software still goes up... she might buy some kind of quiz game too [smarty pants] and might consider carnival games as well, but unless she comes into contact with more gamers like you, is unlikely to even get as far as raving rabbids or warioware.

Or perhaps if she has children might get a few animated film tie-ins

I have a Wii because I want girls to play with it.

Well since Wii software just blew away 360 software in December, even without Wii sports and with LESS Wiis in America (Meaning it had a much better attach rate during the month), I don't think there is any concern at all about Wii owners buying games. Maybe we should start worrying about 360 owners buying games when its software is being outsold by a smaller userbase in North America and greatly outsold worldwide? Or the PS3 software sales where the system is selling software well for its hardware numbers, but because of its hardware numbers is being killed worldwide?

My Wii is kind of like a big iphone. If I am out at a bar and need directions I just pull out the old Wii, connect it to a tv, find an open wireless network and viola! I have directions, news, sports and anything else I need for a fraction of the cost of an iphone.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

You guys, this yankee guy is right to a point. most of you are nintendo fanboys, so you say there are a bunch of games to play. But, you also spout that this console is bought by a lot of casuals. Casuals honestly don't care much about the hardcore games you guys like. They are more for the mainstream games of the Wii, and give a rat's ass about the hardcore games you keep saying everyone will buy.

i will be ROFFLE when the ps3 outsells the Wii for a week worldwide. It will happen in the next 6 months, no matter how much crap is spewed out from your mouths.

In the next 6 months? Well I doubt it but anything could happen... it will either have to be next week/week after whilst Wii is still low, or else GTA4 release [assuming it is same week for US and EU] ... even then I am sceptical. GTA4 will make a huge impact but it would need to almost triple its sales. Despite the unlikelyhood of this happening, what does it mean for PS3 to outsell Wii for 1 week when Wii has outsold PS3 for all other weeks, most by more than double.

It's nice to know that the Sony fanboys have lowered their expectations from that non-existent Sony domination scenario and are shooting for a more reasonable goal for the PS3 to obtain during its lifetime, which is possibly outselling the Wii at least once sometime in the future. Maybe.

Sony Domination PS3 outselling Wii for one year one month one week one day one hour begins 2006 2007 2008 2009 when Lair Heavenly Sword UT3 Killzone 2 MGS 4 Final Fantasy XIII releases

Did I mention that my Wii stands up vertically? I also have Wii-condoms for it if I have too much fun with girls. I don't want it to slip out of their grasp. ;)

Well, to be fair, he did say "no one is playing games on wii" and not the standard "no one is buying games for thr wii." I suppose he and other "credible" analysts now have to change their words, after seeing those very numbers that you pointed out.

I mean, I know when I buy a wii game, I don't drop $15-$50 to play the game.......who would do that? I just buy it for the nice cover, so I can brag to people that I have wii games. And 3rd party devs care about this greatly. They don't want sales. They just want people to be playing their games all the time. And this is why they will stop making wii games, which are profitable, and make PS360 games, which don't make money, but of course, people play games 10 hrs a day. (Note: this 2nd part was sarcasm).

Also, @ TWRoO......I think that there is an actual ping-pong game in Wii Play.

SMG makes for a wonderful coaster.
