We should consider, if Namco/From Software didn't consider the game successful would they have ported it to PC? Would they have decided to release downloadable content if the game was not successful? Namco orignally assured fans there would be no downloadable content, and I think the success of the game allowed them to rethink that decision. At the same time, this game being a Sony exclusive could have generated feedbacks a multiplatform game couldn't. Sony might have advertised the game more. And I think exclusivity is also very good marketing for a game. I love the game, its maybe the best game I have played this generation, and I hope it makes it to 2 mil sales. The developers took everything that made Demon's Souls good and made it spectacular. I can't wait for the DLC. One user also mentioned the difficulity of the game, I think From Software acknowelged they want to try something easier, and I hope they do. I would love to see them focus on telling a story rather than focsung on making the game harder. The story in Dark Souls is one of the most intelligently writtent stories this generation. |
I have another opnion about the "downloadable content".
The DLC just exists because the PC port... to make the dudes buy the PC game too... it was exclusive to PC but a lot of fans hated that and Nanco changed and now they are to release the DLC in every plataform.
The PC port is just a cheaper choice to try to sell more units of this game because they are not satisfacted with the sales in 360/PS3 version.
The sales is not good for a multiplaform game... even 2M is low for multiplataform game... for exclusive 2m is fine but there are a lot of cost to develop a multoiplaforma game.
That's what I think.

You might be right. At the same time I think the PC version was a result of high demand.
The other thing to consider is that Demon's Souls and Dark Souls were very successful compared to From Software's 'King's Field' games on the PS2.
If From Software could stay afloat on the sales of 'King's Field' games then i think Dark Souls has been a great success for them.
I agree with the costs of multiplatform development and localisation to Europe. So for Namco Bandai they might have expected more sales. But for From Software I think this is the most successful game they've ever made, so on the side of the developers I think it was a great success. On the side of the publisher I think it was a moderate success.
At the same time, I've seen a few people comment about Sony. And its not just about fanboyism. The publisher Namco Bandai have a dubious reputation. They originally created the limited edition of the game to come with a copy of a mini strategy guide. They went back on their word and removed the mini-strategy guide from the packaging, and made it available for digitial download. Which I think is annoying.
And I didn't see much advertising for this game. I think if a different publisher was involved, like say Sqaure Enix they would have advertised the game better. Look at how good Sleeping Dogs was marketing and its become a suprise success. I think the game would have been more successful if Namco were not publishing.
The number as of today is 1.71 million copies sold, still not including any PC sales. Still a great decision to go multiplat.

...eh, not really
VGcharts reports Demon's Souls with 1.65m and Dark Souls with 1.71m, that's a difference of 0.6 mil.
Considering the far bigger costs of
-marketing -production -360 tech customization
I doubt it was a more profitable game.
I am sorry but fanboyism aside the numbers say that for Namco it was not that good a decision, especially considering they doubled their potential market.

The question here is, would it have been more succesful if it was a PS3 only game ?
The reality is that Dark Souls failed to bring back the original PS3 buyers and the issue is that Demon's Souls was not a highly advertised impulse buy, it was a game that sold slowly through word of mouth and people knew what they were getting themselves into. I mean if there is a crowd you could say that got the game because of the reviews and the hype and din't like it, that is (some) 360 gamers.

It was not the developers' decision but Namco's. But anyway real fans have nothing to bitch about since the game was not compromised / westernized one bit for the shake of the 360 crowd.
If anything 360 / PC gamers got a taste of real old school playstation gaming.
Except those bigger costs were offset by the first few weeks of sales, which equals more profits. Better sales in the first week and better sales in the long term. There's no way around it, sorry, but going multiplat was a fantastic business decision because they're successful for it. By the end of the year, the sales will be even higher thanks to the any small holiday boosts this game recieves. From Software is making more money. By they way, are there any links to compare the budgets From Software had for both games? I'm curious to see the actual gap.

Make Dark Souls 2 a Wii U exclusive, I'm sure it will sell amazingly.

This yet again proves that going Multiplatform in no way assures tremendous sales, or at least sales will increase anywhere out of the norm. In hind sight it does nothing but inflict more dev costs....but at least the shareholders/devs feel more secure about the release I suppose.
What they fail to realize is often times, Exclusives get more media attention as amunition in the "console war". If the game is good this is very good press, that is what happened with Demon's Souls. Dark Souls I am sure made them less money due to making it for 2 consoles as well as the fact MP games decrease in price drastically fast in order to make a quicker return. It took Demon's Souls twice as long to start dropping in the 20bucks range.
Sony fucked this up though, they had such little faith in it even after all the praise. Usually they are good with backing devs vision. Hopefully they are now on board to fully fund a Demon's Souls 2 for PS3/4. I prefer Demon's mythos far more. Maiden Astrea and King Allant FTMFW!!!!!!!!!!!!

Surely it's cheaper to make a sequel anyway? So extra costs in making a 360 version totally mitigated by the fact that they already had the tech/knowledge from when they made the first game?
