Forums - Gaming - Report: PS3 comback, shallow Wii, tepid portables in '08

The problem with Nintendo's lineup is it's really only SSBB, SMK, and Wii Fit then a big question mark for the rest of the year. Maybe they'll pull out Star Fox and Animal Crossing but will they be big enough to compete with what will likely be a lot of big 350/PS3 multiplatform games as well as the exclusives for each of those consoles?

they could release pikmin f-zero and animal croosing like you said plus dont forget wii music and alot of 3rd party titles so yes i think it can compete with ps3/360's lineup

The article talks about interest in software, not hardware. It says nothing about sales. In fact, all it says that in 15 million gamers, the PS3's lineup is preferred about as much as the 360's, with the Wii's in third but still strong.

This does not mean that 15 million are interested in Ps3, it says 15 total. So if we divide it to 40-40-20 interest, then only 6 million of the 15 are interested and prefer the ps3's. Not to mention that is only hardcores, who have likely already made their purchase and preference for this generation.

To sum up: this article says nothing.

Another (obvious) question is how do they determine the number of distinct gamers that surf their site?

If someone surfs IGN from Home, Work and School would they suddenly count as 3 distinct gamers? Wouldn't this favour the systems that have far more obsessive gamers?

Legend probably said a year ago "All Nintendo has this year is Paper Mario, Metroid 3, and Mario Galaxy. How can they expect to compete with the 360/PS3 lineup?"

They did pretty well, as it turns out.

They monitor 15 million gamers and they all look on PS3 or they monitor 15 million gamers where most of the people looks on PS3 games?

Think twice before helping a friend in need.

Exactly. A year ago nobody even heard of Wii Fit and Super Mario Galaxy. It wasn't until well into the Summer before anyone even had a clue of what these games were about.

I wouldn't say nobody heard of Mario Galaxy.  That title's been hyped for a while.  Details may not have been as abundant but ppl were still hyped for it.

Another thing, just because someone reads a preview or looks at the images for a game doesn't (necessarily) mean that they are interested in buying the game ... I have read several news stories and previews for games on systems I didn't own (or have any intention of buying) simply to find out what all the fuss was about.

I agree, but SMG was nothing more than a name for the first half of the year. Almost no details about the game became available until the summer.

I wonder sometimes if it's not considered a rite of passage into gaming journalism to predict doom and gloom for the company that's currently top dog... Or perhaps it's just a case of "any attention is good attention". Whatever it may be, naysayers have been predicting the fall of successful consoles ever since the Atari first came out. Ultimately they're right about the system eventually giving in (since no console has ever lasted longer than about 10 years before getting phased out entirely), but their reasoning and arguments always fall short of reality, and their estimates of when a system is going to boom or spell doom tend to be way off.

Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.

Good software isn't the only thing that causes things to sell. If so N64 would have crushed all and we all know this. Takes more than just dominant software that sells well to push hardware. This will help but Sony needs more parts working at the same time to force this comeback to arise.
