We'll just have to wait a few days after release, as I'm sure a few people are going to break this puppy down to see what's inside. I do have to say I wouldn't be surprised if the Wii U is weaker than what many were expecting.

Yep, a lot of people put a lot of energy into defending the Wii U as being much more powerful than it is. I was hoping that those people would be correct, but I sort of had a feeling that things would turn out this way. I wonder now how many think that Wii U isn't overpriced by $50. Or how many still believe that Wii U can easily do 1080p 60fps on just about any AAA 3D title. I think it's time for many on this site to start thinking a bit more realistically about the capabilities of this new console. Just as the Wii was barely capable of anything more than Xbox and Gamecube, such is the Wii U to PS3 and X360. |
the funny thing is I recently revived a AMD Athlon64 x2 5000 with 4GB of DDR2 and all I did was put a 550Ti in it and it was running Bulletstorm maxed at 1080p 60FPS under Windows 7, really makes your wonder :P

if i remeber right the core in the wii is a 2nd generation custom build off the 750CXe think 2001 and imac it was a 32 bit chip with a 128 bit vector core ripped out and a few other changes, i dont remember ever reading that they moved it to a newer family of chips so it stands to reason if its still based on the 740/750 and just a 3rd revision custom it would still be 32 bit.... though i dont know why they would not go after a new core alnog the lines of what ms/sony has or a newer member of the power family the 740/750 the made very good strides in low power is quite antiquated ... IBM also said it would never go below 90nm so if the chip is 90nm bet its still a 740/50 ... if not then a new core
so could still be a custom powerpc core... and power is related to powerpc pretty closely.... some members of power are PPC as well...

The official site mentions 45nm.

On IBM's site where they talk about the WiiU, they say that it's on a 45nm core. That automatically means it's likely based on Power7, Power8, upgraded and based on Broadway (which was 90nm), or entirely new altogether.

If the Wii U's CPU was worth mentioning then Nintendo would have mentioned it by now, ditto for GPU. They talked about having the 'most RAM ever in a console' but no news on the processors? No news is bad news, really did anyone expect anything bar a respin of the Wii?
Tease.
NDA that is all. They are not allowed to give a single bit of info that gives anyone a relatively narrow idea of what it is. So they can't say "power7" ... just "power".
God I can't wait for it to launch and get broken down so all you naysayers can see in plain facts that it is much better than PS360. Especially once the games start flowing near the end of 2013 that show a visual leap or are the same games that are launching on the other next gen consoles.

That's an assumption. Most people probably wouldn't be able to make much sense of it, as you can see even here when people "revealed" it supposedly. People still have no idea what it means. I doubt you do either.

surely this has to be bs... after the countless posts confirming otherwise...

the 45nm size would rule out broadway unless IBM changed course on the refuseal to die shrink the 7XX series. so power 7... or the power7+ but i still favor the theory its based on the core in cell/360 updated and refined for lower power.. the 7/7+ series is too hot and power hungry
