Forums - Nintendo - How Nintendo Is Taking Over The Japanese Video Game Market One IP At A Time ~ :)

I think the buzz created by getting Bayonetta 2 as exclusive is even more important than the game itself! :D

A probably incomplete list of notable Japanese franchises with at least one big Nintendo-exclusive game in the past few years:
Resident Evil (Revelations, I say)
Dragon Quest
Monster Hunter
Kingdom Hearts
Shin Megami Tensei
Fatal Frame/Project Zero
Vs. Capcom
Sonic the Hedgehog

Now we can anticipate Bayonetta to join the list. Will we see more? Could a theoretical future Ninja Gaiden game become exclusive?

didn't Monster Hunter tri release as freedom 3rd on PSP and as portable 3rd HD on PS3 (jpn only) ? so what's left as exclusive Nintendo MH?

Portable 3rd and the HD version are considered to be seperate games, not updates for MHTri. Tri G (or Ultimate) however, is.

While I agree Nintendo is making in roads with a lot of companies, I don't think they are taking over Japan.

It seems to me they made the most progress with Sega, Square Enix and Toei Kemco, they are still on Konami's S--- list from what I've seen. And several developers that gotten hot during the days of the PS1 and PS2 seem more willing to gamble on the PS Vita or even the PSP, then try moving products on a Nintendo system.

The only IP we know Nintendo has bought is Fatal Frame/Zero but them securing exclusives like Monster Hunter, Shin Megami Tenshin, Dragon Quest and a few others does help. Although there is no doubt the majority of Nintendo's wealth in the coming years in Japan is going to come from the 3DS dominating the handheld market that controls Japanese gaming culture.

I think that Nintendo`s biggest gain - or gains - will not be achieved soon but more towards the middle/end of this generation and specially the next one.
If 3DS, for example, can maintain it`s customers - which seems to be doing just fine - and still cut into PSP/Vita`s customers that could build a perception and strength in the market already in this generation but also build confidence and simpathy from both developers and customers for the next one and that is half the success already. I think the same happened with PS1>PS2, where PS1 had to make a name for itself and PS2... well, complete domination is what happened after.

Software competition is what's good for gamers, not hardware competition.

Hardware competition only drives up the prices of everything, because companies engage in an arms race. Software competition is what leads to better games without raising the prices.

Ha Ha Ha, you funny.

I applaud Nintendo's ambitions! What they're doing will be really good for them in the long run; acquire more IP's, more studios - and for god's sake, make some new IP's! :D

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Really?  I didn't have that impression at all.  FWIU, Konami (well, Kojima) is still trying to figure out what to do with WiiU.  (At least when I read the article about Metal Gear Solid U being considered back in 2011; even Kojima's recent comments about having to make something unique for the WiiU doesn't really suggest otherwise to me.  Even then, they ARE giving us a Castlevania on 3DS — albeit an American/European/Spanish made one.)  Although when the system takes off, I think they'll jump on the hype train too.  It's only a matter of time.

Yeah, if we look at the 5 biggest Japanese franchises (in no order):

Pokemon
Super Mario
Dragon Quest
Monster Hunter
Final Fantasy

Well, two of them are Nintendo first party titles and another two of them only appear on Nintendo consoles right now. Final Fantasy is more on the Sony side but it's a lot smaller these days than the other four franchises listed. Nintendo's ambitions are pretty obvious, they had no success getting mainline Final Fantasy games so far and in the west they still couldn't get Rockstar to publish mainline GTA games on their consoles but the direction is clear.

Which is precisely why I feel that they'll succeed in getting a mainline FF this time.  S-E and Nintendo have gotten more genial with each other over the years, and I can't imagine FF not coming to WiiU.

GTA seems to be an even iffier position; I don't know what Rockstar's stand is with WiiU, but I think that would be more difficult.

So long as I have plenty of games to choose from, I'm happy. I did feel the pain in late 2009 with slim pickings and it resulted in a PS3 purchase in Feb 2010. If Nintendo can keep quality 3rd party games coming, I'll be able to spend my money on games, not hardware.
