Forums - Nintendo - Forbes: Angry 'Bayonetta' Fans Lash Out At Platinum Games Over Wii U Exclusivity

jesus man when are you going to get it? it doesn't matter if it sold 2 or 3 or 4M if it still didn't manage to cover the costs of producing it. do you think that it's a success for a game like grand theft auto to sell 1M? it´s just plain math or do you also need a lecture on that?

Was it confirmed the game didn't profit? I haven't read that and a sequel doesn't lead me to believe it was a failure. What motivated Nintendo to get behind a failure?

Yes, I think a game produced by a small Japanese studio needs to sell as much as a mega budget game like Grand Theft Auto to profit. You just proved how clueless you are.

Please, I'd love to see you to do the math. I want to see the math done by someone that thinks Bayonetta and Grand Theft Auto have the same budget.

And once again, it didn't sell 1M. It sold nearly 2M! And some additional digital copies, merchandise, etc.

Didn't it sell at a deep discount shortly after release, though? Anyone got price history? 2M at regular price would have profited a lot.

hehe no dude the lecture was just about basic math, i said as a joke. And as i said before i'm only guessin in why there wasn´t gonna be a sequel, i only take the "didn't cover the budget" as a MAYBE, because the most obvious thing is that if the game was profitable then sega would not have even stopped to think about doing a sequel

Yeah normally I'd agree but Sega is having lots of issues in general so I think it's abnormally plausible that they might not be willing to make the investment even if the first game got profit.  That said, it's tough to prove either direction so it's not like Puggsly is on better footing than you, your scenario is more likely than his or probably even mine, but it's not 100% certain and there are plausible alternative explainations, just thought I'd throw that out there.

I think it should be noted how poorly Anarchy Reigns is being handled. I'm sure Sega would cancel if that were an option.

The link for the interview I posted says Platinum Games wants to take Bayonetta to the next level and see the franchise grow. Clearly that isn't gonna happen in the hands of Sega. Perhaps Sega didn't want to publish any more games from Platinum Games because they mostly flop. Or maybe Platinum Games took its most successful title and put it in the hands of a publisher that can actually help it grow.

It seems I'm the only person that thinks Platinum Games has the upper hand here.

I think the point is, Bayonetta clearly underperformed relative to expectations or Bayonetta 2 would have been a no-brainer release for the PS3/Xbox 360. Instead, it was more like a Heavenly Sword/Enslaved/Mirror's Edge in that it was developed with the potential for a franchise, but luke-warm commercial reception made it a hard sell.

Looking at the sales on VGChartz, It did about 927,000 in its first 10 weeks. It looks like sales were pretty strong early on and it still has legs.

THQ said Homefront had to sell 2 million to break even. Bear in mind that was a big budget game with a huge advertising campaign.

News that ‘Bayonetta 2′ is coming only to Nintendo’s next-gen Wii U has some fans up in arms.

After all, Platinum Games only had two choices in this scenario: They could either not make a sequel, or they could bring the sequel to the Wii U as an exclusive. Either way, non-Wii U owners are out of luck. Given their options, I think Platinum Games did the right thing.

Well, no they didn't only have 2 choices. The third option was to convince Sega that Bayonetta 2 would be a viable 3-console + PC multiplat. Evidently Sega are either really smart or really stupid for rejectiong PG on this. We'll see I guess.

I also dispute the claim that PG did the right thng. Arguably PG should recognise that Bayonetta is a franchise with limited appeal in a genre that really struggles to get really high sales. Basically, God of War and Devil May Cry are the only comparable franchises that have met with big success. And this gen DMC has fallen well behind. So that leaves God of War as the lone big selling H'n'S game. So PG, from a business perspective, could have been better off putting its resources into something else.

If PG was smart (which they possibly aren't) they should have got themselves an out clause to allow them to publish on other consoles if certain sales levels aren't achieved: e.g. if B2 gets at least an 80 Metascore and sells less than 1.5 million in a year then we get to try to put the game on other systems.

That way if B2 sells like Madworld it would still give PG a chance to get some sales from a fairly cheap porting process. And it gives them the choice of either old gen console or new, given 1 year after launch on Wii U it will be PS4/720 launch time.

The PS3 is saturated with H'n'S, so Bayonetta can make haven on WiiU. /issue (puggsly, this answers your question here -> http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=4781533)

@Darkrequiem. Epic pun, you get a pro-fist on the shoulder that was damn clever.

@Torillian. I agree with you it's hard to tell which way it went. But as you said the risk is too strong for Sega to attempt it, they would prefer Sonic games in general than solidifying infant IPs.
