First a quote from the article's author:
I really hope this particular representative was smoking crack here.
If the system has to be in "wii mode" for Virtual Console that, to me, is like them admitting that it's a legacy service that won't be maintained. How on earth can I buy more games if this is the case.
I'm so disgusted. I was hyped for the system and I preordered, but if this is true, I may cancel and see how crap plays out. So upsetting.

Watch. While all the games we already bought can't be played on the Game Pad, we will be welcome to purchase the "Wii U Virtual Console" version and play those on the tablet....
Seriously though, this is so crazy that I really hope the representative fed us bad info, but we report it like we're told!

Bogus info?

Because it makes no sense to me why you wouldn't be able to put the game on the gamepad, when you can do literally everything else. |
It makes no sense... only if they wanted to sell "WiiU VC" with Gamepad support.

They meant play games on the screen, but if the Wii U does go into "Wii mode" when executing Wii content, then the wireless Gamepad is outside that BC restriction... just like Wii's GC (can't use the Classic controller) or 3DS DS (DS games still connect through WEP).

Also, WiiWare titles usually support motion controls, right? Would you want to lie in bed with the Wii U pad between your knees and Wii remote/nunchuck in your hands? :P :O |
Off-screen gameplay is a feature of the WiiU. The Gamepad can easily act as a display and controller simultaneously. Playing classic controlled games such as Super Mario World, Dr. Mario Online Rx or Donkey Kong Country Returns could be possible with the Gamepad. All Virtual Console games could be played with the Gamepad's controls, even future GC titles.
