Forums - Nintendo - Bethesda wary of Wii U: ‘it doesn’t support our games’

VG247

Wii U doesn’t currently ‘fit’ with Bethesda’s titles, VP of PR and marketing Pete Hines has revealed in a new interview. Hines also explained the dangers of running head-first into a new console cycle without seeing the true form of hardware at launch.

Speaking in the latest issue of MCV – as spotted by Videogamer – Hines stressed caution around Nintendo’s console, and explained that Bethesda’s remit is to support formats that fit its releases, adding, “So far the Wii hasn’t fitted into that. Whether Wii U does down the road is TBD.”

On the pressure from the industry to leap on to new hardware, Hines stated, “I don’t think the current generation of consoles are holding us back. There is still plenty that we are able to do visually, technically and from a story-telling standpoint. And there’s this huge built-in audience now”.

On the subject of developing for new consoles before they launch Hines warned, “The developers are trying to hit a moving technical target, because the platforms are being built. A new console doesn’t just show up a year before launch and is exactly what it will be when it comes out.”

“It moves and iterates along the way,” Hines added, “And introducing something like that to games that are in development is always a bit tricky. And that is obviously an element of risk.”

Hines continued, “The second point is that your install base always starts at zero. Then it comes out and suddenly a certain number of people buy it but it won’t be the same number as the current gen. So you have divided your audience.”

“It’s then a case of: Are we just making it for the next gen? Or next gen and current gen? And how many people from the current gen that I’m targeting have moved over to the next gen? It does complicate things a little bit. Obviously the changes they are going to make technologically, in terms of the things we will be able to do, are exciting. But it comes at a price”, Hines concluded.

Thanks Videogamer.

Bethesda doesn't even support their games...

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

So similar graphical capabilities and more RAM = doesn't support their games.

XBox360 with less RAM = Supports their games.

It's obvious that if you don't launch your games on WiiU it will never fit with your audience, no games => no people playing them.

About the second thing... Bethesda only started developing for consoles this gen or what? It has always been the same thing.

Silly Bethesda.

Please excuse my bad English.

Former gaming PC: i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Current gaming PC: R5-7600, 32GB RAM 6000MT/s (CL30) and a RX 9060XT 16GB

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

Ugh, third parties never have a backbone when it comes to Nintendo-consoles. Always the wait and see approach and when they are ready to make games for it, it is already too late.

Bethesda just loves Microsoft but hates Nintendo and Sony.

Darn, all the good Bethesda jabs have gone :/

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Fallout 4 coming this gen. They want that huge User base. Hopefully on a new Engine...otherwise they might as well Skip the PS3 this time around.

Atto Suggests...:

Book - Malazan Book of the Fallen series

Game - Metro Last Light

TV - Deadwood

Music - Forest Swords

More ram could mean less "tricky" code has to be used to achive the same goal.  Therefore more ram  might result in less bugs. = Not a real Bethesda game.
