Forums - Sony - The Last of Us - Pax Demo - Proof that it's not scripted

I dont get why people are discussing this even today. its not even that awesome

I mean its basically: Check if player needs help, see player needs help, look for item to help player, take item and use it. Use taunt if succesfull (eat that shit!) . etc.

Its nothing else than the usual enemy behavior like. Check if player is there. Fire at player, check environment for hiding spots/cover, see low wall, take cover.

Its nothing else. The only difference is that the game checks for items etc. in addition to walls. And has a ton of prerecorded voice.

So I dont get what that fuzz is about.

i think the most important question is why people discussing this game irks some people to the point where they feel its necessary to post in thread on a game they don't find impressive just to down play the game and express wonder at how people can discuss things they don't find interesting

if you don't like the game or find it interesting thats fine but that doesn't mean that others are going to react in the same way and that is something that can be accepted

there're other threads with games that you will find interesting why waste time posting in a thread where that doesn't apply?

y'know I think I'd have to agree that the AI is nothing to write home about, I think what's really impressive to me is the animation system. Naughty Dog has talked about this before, but just how context sensitive your melee attacks are, or how your character will reach out and touch a wall when he's close by. They started this kind of thing in Uncharted 3 with melee attacks that changed based on where you were in the environment if you happened to be close to something interesting like a fish at a market, but TLoU takes it to another level where almost everything seems context sensitive and it helps keep things fresh even though gameplay dictates that you'll be doing the same thing a lot. Also helps the atmosphere of desperation that Joel will use whatever he can to survive.

This game is a good example of how this games A.I react. The A.I obviously isn't scripted to run into the bushes at a certain progression in a game, but to run into the bushes in an attempt to seek cover whenever a certain requirement is met. So it isn't hard scripted, but it also isn't not scripted. This game was made in 2001 by the way and it is more advanced A.I than most video games today. That's pretty bad. Anyways, another good example of advanced A.I would be the Arma series.  While the A.I in the video looks good, in reality we can't truly see how the A.I works until the game is out.  Who knows, the A.I might end up having flaws players will find a way to exploit.  Will be fun to see how it turns out.

1. Thanks for posting that video
2. I must agree that the KI is impressive for a game at this age ( in fact i have played many modern games where the KI enemys are rellay stupid compared to the game you mentioned here) but on the other side enyms running behind walls ect, running forward when your ammo is empty ect we have seen severla times right knwo in games like Uncharted, Killzone ect so in my eyes the KI system of The Last of Us is way beyound those examples. And for me as a gamer it doesnt depend how much is scripted for me is important how it feels to play.
And the KI in The Last of us give as the imagination as the eneyms are very intelligent and handle in a logic way ( even if all are only scripted moments.

I can see what you're trying to say, but we've only really gotten 1 gameplay video with very little enemies.  You can't make a final judgement based on that alone.  Onto a different route, some guy mentioned A.I getting on their knees begging being unique to this game.  When in fact I found the same A.I reaction in Assassins creed when the main player picks off both his friends. But yeah this A.I looks pretty good. Anything is better than the A.I Fallout3/NV had. On a side note I want to make a thread about stupid crap A.I does now.

Like Batman has some terrible A.I lol.  I was reminded of this.

I see people on various forums going crazy about this games AI, but why is it so special? It seems like typical enemy AI. Guy throws something, enemy runs over there ignoring everything along the way. Hasn't this been in like.. every stealth game since PSone? Gun fight ensues, enemy takes terrible path towards user character, completely ignores him hiding by the window even though he looks right at him, runs outside to easily die. Complete lack of awareness of surroundings. Typical AI.

Buying day one because I love the setting and atmosphere but people are getting silly with the praise.

I think the most important question is why people especially some blind fans just want to read what they want and not whats written in front of their eyes.

well...
too bad you never learned how to read.  Where exactly do I say i have no interest in the game? I am looking forward to the game and I will get it for sure.

BTW I highlighted the useless part of your reply because It seems to be adressed to someone else and not me.

You have to admit (and to his credit) your initial post doesn't make a good case that you have a real interest in this game. I'm not saying that you don't,just that the post doesn't support what you're saying.

I don't see where it doesn't?  He just simply isn't getting hyped to the point where he makes blind facts about the game.  He is being honest about the games A.I and visuals.  He doesn't have to lie about the visuals to show interest in the game.

Zomg dat AI!!!!! So excited!! Does this bother you?! Sue me...
