I also did buy the 2D Mario ... but not for $60 :)
It was like $30-35? from a first day sale for my 3DS... or did I miss a 2D mario on wii ?

Mario games are about the gameplay. That's it. The worlds and the graphics all take a seat to the secrets and the precision of the control. 2D gameplay in a Mario game is much tighter than that of a 3D game. It's simple and easier to get into, too. There are people in the world that won't touch a 3D Mario game but LOVE a 2D adventure. There aren't too many people that will take a 3D Mario game but won't play 2D Mario.

Zelda, on the other hand, has enormous scope, great atmosphere, several characters, and a fully realized world. 3D is just a perfect fit for it.

All my opinion, of course.
