Forums - Sony - How long on average should a 10Gb game take to install?

That is crazy! I haven't had to do an install that big, yet. I probably never will since I'm low on PS3 HDD Space and I normally just go with retail. The biggest install for me was the one for Heavy Rain which took about a half an hour. Still, I hate to be the guy to bring it up but......I hear other consoles can install an entire game (optional) in about ten minutes.

Just a heads up; DC Universe is 17GB. Biggest mandatory install. You don't have to do it all in one sitting as the game has it's own little download/install manager when you launch that allows you to leave and resume by launching and quiting the game. Has a nice screen that includes WonderWoman's butt while you wait, as well... uhh... not that that means anything...

Wonder Woman's butt, you say?  Hmm.....I gotta go clear some HDD space!

Starting to wish I'd invested in a bigger HDD sooner, I've downloaded almost every game I've either bought from psn or gotten from plus and I still have over a 100gb left I'll need to do the mandatory installs for all my games but hopefully that won't take too much space as well.

Main reason I got a bigger HDD was so I could record more tv shows...would be annoying if after the dust settles I can't do that :D

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

I've finally gotten round to downloading the ps+ games and unsuprisingly, they are all large files, fair enough. But the problem comes when installing, just tried to install darksiders 10gb in size and it took 1hr...is that normal?

Extremely fast for me. For a 14 gb game took me 48 hours. That is almost .25 gb per hour.

I think you might have HDD problems. It shouldn't take that long O_O

must be because my PS3 is ancient compared to what most people have + slow internet.

he stated he isn't talking about downloading the actual games so speed of net doesn't have anything to do with this, once you got the games downloaded from psn they appear on your list of games in little bubble form and before you play them you just gotta hit X on it and install this can take a good while for full ps3 games that is what he is saying is taking an hour not his net speed downloading the games.

Ah yeah, I will be honest have not actually installed the 14 gb game because it requires another 14 gb to install. Installs for any other game are under 10 min.

My Ps3 takes 3 hrs for 1gb... Your ps3 is pretty good.

Yay!!!

It depends on the game, seriously. Sometimes something like 5 gigs will fly by, other times a 1 gig install will take forever (relative to its size).

It has to do with how fragmented the files being install are, like 1 big file will install way faster than 5000 small files of the same size.

it really depends... PSN games can be in some sort of ZIP file that has to be uncompress or something... because just to move files around, the PS3 HDD can copy 11GB (internally) in around 6 minutes. and from BD drive to HDD can do 500 MB per minute. so that result you got have to do with file fragmentation or compression process.

While the Xbox can do it's optional install thing in about 10 mins you have to think of the difference, the 360 has the disk for the game inside its drive and it's just reading the info from that bit for bit onto the harddrive, all it's doing is making an image of the disk ready to use on its harddrive. The ps3 on the other hand is working twice as much with its harddrive, like the file to begin with is on there, so it is going to be going back and forth, reading the info from the zip style bubble file and rewriting it elsewhere on the harddrive over and over again.

Also as much as I much prefer my 360 to my ps3 you'll not find a single xbox disk over like 7.4gb so that install has a cap on how long it can take, infamous 2 from psn+ atm was 15gb, I know there are of course multi disk xbox games but yeah the install you speak of is just a single disk.
