Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Should Invest in Platinum Studios

These guys do nothing but quality work. They develop multiple games at a fast rate. They can make nice looking HD games. Their games are unique and quirky. They were the core of the team that made arguably the best game on the GameCube (Resident Evil 4). What's not to like?

Project: P-100 looks like the best of the early Wii U software. To me this is a no brainer, once MGS Rising wraps, Nintendo should finance these guys for the rest of the generation. Scoop up Mikami's new game too (Project Zwei). Heck, they even want to make a Star Fox game (not that they should be stuck on Nintendo IP, you want them making cool, original games too but one Nintendo property wouldn't hurt).

On the PS3/360/PS4/720 these guys are just going to be lost in the mix. There's too much "mature" content (month after month of new releases) and Western devs crowding that market. That's how a high quality, really kick ass looking game like Vanquish got lost in the shuffle.

Take Vanquish, lets say Nintendo had bought that out a few years ago and held it for the Wii U launch -- I have no doubt that game probably would be the star of the Wii U launch window at least critically. There's room for Platinum Games to carve out an audience with Nintendo in other words. Nintendo I don't think ever properly addressed the loss of Rare, that was like losing 1-3 pretty good games/year, they need a sidekick developer they can rely on to give them a good game during those ugly drought periods that plagued the GameCube and Wii all too much.

These guys should be a future cornerstone developer in the Nintendo family IMO, along with Monolith (who should be given a bigger emphasis on Wii U), Retro Studios (who should at least have 2 teams), and NST (reformed with the Sonic co-creator for the DKC franchise?).

I think Nintendo should invest in more 2nd part developers period. So, yes - yes they should invest in Platinum =)

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

These guys really deserve the attention and marketing Nintendo can give them as a singular publisher too.

Vanquish would be getting a ton of attention if it was a Wii U launch game exclusive, and that's a genuinely terrific game that no one played on the PS3/360.

When you're a Nintendo exclusive and your game is very good, you get so much more attention, and bumbling third parties that never really take Nintendo seriously leave a wide open market that's hungry for good content.

I think Mad World was a bit of a mistake though, far too ridiculously violent and bizarre art style. Nintendo fans will accept quirky/weird, but that was a bit too far niche. Something in the vein of Devil May Cry or Vanquish or Okami could do well on Wii U. I think Project P-100 (reminscent of Viewtiful Joe) will do well on Wii U, because it's one of the stand out titles for the system.

I don't think nintendo are keen on buying out studios

They did buy out Monolith though. Platinum is arguably a better developer (though better to have both).

They could just invest in the studio, they don't need to outright buy them out.

If I was Iwata, seeing how good Project P-100 is shaping up, I'd walk into their studio and tell them to throw out their PS3/360/PS4/720 dev kits once MGS Rising wraps. They won't need them for the next 5 years.

Get these guys working on multiple Wii U exclusives and nothing else (well maybe a 3DS game too) stat.

they should bribe 3rd party more instead.

Its unacceptable that there is no Star Wars 1313, Watch Dogs, Crysis 3, and a myriad of other important key titles.

IF GTA IV comes though, they will redeem themselves of everything.

why would they invest in a developer whose games like crap..No offence I love thier games but nintendo always makes games to appeal to the mainstream audience and that niche genre of platinum games dont really suit that model.Nintendo however is very keen to invest and publish games so if p-100 does become a sucess I can see nintendo trying to invest in platinum to make a another game for wii U or 3ds

I belive platinum is made by some very talented people, but also are trying to be very independant . Even if they got the rghts for a game they make it wouldnt ensure their stay, also i doubt they want to be bought since many of them are coming from pretty bad experiences from their past "owners".
It will be great, but i dont see it happening yet.

They should buy Level 5.

They're great, but they need more guidance. For every success there, there's 2 flops.

I think it would be a good idea. Platinum develops the kind of games that Nintendo doesn't, so this deal would benefit them.

But I'm not sure if Platinum would like it. They are mostly ex-members of Capcom that left the Co. looking for more freedom and new challenges. Being involved again with a big Co like Nintendo is not what they were looking for.

Although sporadic partnerships, like P-100, could be the way to go for both.
