Forums - General - World's richest woman says poor should have less fun, work harder. Calls for lower minimum wage and tax cuts

That article was pathetic, her first points were quite valid, get off your butt an work! Don't complain about not having money and then go buy 2 freaking packs of cigarettes and a couple beers!

Her last comment about wages and Taxes was stupid, however. :P

That is more a daily consumption for most the people she is referring to in Aus.

The tax needs to be cut, as they just introduced an outragous carbon tax worth about 7BN a year to the government.

The lower wage will most likely increase now that the first $18,000 is not taxible, meaning all part time workers will demand a pay rise as they know they won't be taxed.

I was thinking she was saying that wages should be lowered in general, not just in Australia, oops!

But I'm not sure what you mean by your first sentence.

At least you guys in the USA/Australia have unemployment benefits and minimum wage.

Over here in Singapore, there is no unemployment benefit.
You get paid $4.50 SGD per hour if you work at McDonalds.

A fresh graduate would be considered lucky if he/she gets a job in a bank and is paid $2000 SGD and works 12 hours or more a day.

If you're jobless, there is no unemployment benefit. If you're ill and you have no money to pay the hospital, you're f*cked.

Wow! I guess that would be difficult (to give out benefits) since it's such a small country and you guys might not make enough money?

By first sentence I mean the people she is refering to consume WAY more then 2 packs of smokes and a couple of beers. That is probably what they do daily on weekdays. Weekend is worst lol.

As I said previously, I have no issue with people drinking and smoking but if they spenidng around 80%-90% of their wage on those two items only, then going to charities asking them to help pay bills then their priorities are all wrong. I know people who work with my mum earn around $50K a year. In the area they all live that is good money, but they still struggle to pay bills. My mum does smoke and drink occasionlly but spend 10% of her wage on those items. Hence she has enough money left to pay bills.

So, a few people took my example of working hard from poor unprivileged beginnings and becoming successful and stated a few things..

1) theoretically not everyone can be well off as there has to be people on bottom....
uh yeah so fucking what? Those are the dumb-asses who chose to not work hard. Be happy and shut it.

2) ok, but I was lucky to be born in a 1st world nation where I even have that opportunity...
uh yeah so fucking what? So was the person being quoted and so was her intention of her quote. She and I both spoke within the confines of our living conditions in a 1st world country. Where does any of the 3rd world come into that scenario? No fucking shit someone born into a wasteland in Africa with horrible dictators not really have any chance at getting to the top unless they kill the one on top or marry well. But I wasn't talking about Africa... I was talking about US and by similarity other 1st world nations.

Then there's my next example. One of my closests friends are also high school sweethearts and dropped out of high school at ages 16/17, worked at McDonalds, had two kids (1st at 17/18, 2nd at 20/21)... also worked their assess off at full time fast food/retail jobs. Wife has master's degree and is about to become an Executive at IBM the other just finished his Bachelor's a couple years ago, might go back for Masters, and is working at a technical based company. They also have solid 6 figure incomes and eldest son is just now starting his college education after being a nearly 4.0 graduate from a public high school.

Facts are, if you work hard you will succeed... and yes for the explicit folks reading this, of course this is only referring to 1st world nations where the establishment is good enough for this to happen. I wish I could fix the rest of the world, but unfortunately that is not within my capacity. I do try to vote for people that are not for the continued US unethical dominance and rape of the 3rd world, but the majority don't seem to see it happening.

Singapore is actually a rich country. We are one of the most affluent countries in the world.  Our Prime Minister earns $3 MILLION dollars a year. Our President $4 Million a year. They are the highest paid politicians in the world.
But guess what. Singaporeans as a whole, especially the middle and lower class are VERY POOR. The income disparity is HUGE.

Singapore imports ALOT of foreigners and they take away the jobs from the locals. More than one-third of the population in Singapore is now made up of Foreigners from India, China, Phillipines, Malaysia, Indonesia who take away jobs from the locals and push down the wages due to them being able to accept a lower wage than Singaporeans.

In spite of the local population's outcry againsts the government's policy of importing foreigners, they go on to do things like spending huge sums of money on foreigners.

Here are some examples.

1) Deny Singapore students a place in the local university. Pay money to import foreigners to study in Singapore and pay for their lodging + school fees.

2) Bashing Singapore Citizens of being useless compared to foreigners who are "Cheaper, Better and Faster". We are probably the only country in the world where our politicians openly bash our own citizens.

3)  The huge influx of foreigners pushing up the price of houses in Singapore. We have a term for our apartments. Its called "Shoe Box Appartments". Which cost 800k to 1 million SGD and they are only around 600 square feet. Even our flats which are supposedly subsidised by the government hit a high of 1 millions.

4) Singapore government importing China nationals to represent us in the Olympics. These China nationals are being paid a salary, lodging provided, training being paid for. And when they won the bronze medals in table tennis, these China nationals were being paid $250k EACH.
We had a local who took part in Olympics too I think. His training wasn't paid for, nothing was provided for him. When he won a bronze medal, he was only paid $50k.

I'm going to give myself as an example. I suffer from severe  Haemophilia. My medical fees are at least $600 a month. On bad months where I get severe bleeds, my cost can go up to a thousand or more. What happens if I'm unemployed and have no money to pay for my medications? Nothing. I will  bleed to death. The government won't care.

And I thought only corporate jobs were being taken away from Singaporeans by the foreigners. No. As a part time theatre actor, I went to an audition last week and I was the only local there in the audition room. The rest were from Malaysia, Phillipines, India, Thailand. I was like F*ck my Life.

I'm surprised she has the nerve to say what she said after inheriting her wealth from her family who made their money selling minerals to an energy hungry China. It's not easy climbing the ladder if your born into a run down part of the world. Some are born with a silver spoon in their mouth, others with a wooden one. She needs to understand that.

Totally 100% agree with the woman.

We're all equal in this world, the difference is how we choose to live our lives.
