Forums - Gaming - If Sony made a sub $399 PS3 at launch- would it have outsold the PS2 and force MS out of gaming?

Dilemma: what would you rather have:

A dominating weaker PS3 w... 69 40.12%

The PS3 as it is now 103 59.88%

Total:172

wat if Sony was a girl???

It was the bluray which pushed the price so high. Sony may have won that format war, but it was a phyrric victory.

If the PS3 only cost $399 and included the Playstation Eye and Playstation Move it would have bankrupted Sony or the system would have only been modestly more powerful than the Wii.

Uh no, PS Eye is just a camera with no exotic features. A 399 ps3 wouldve been equal to a 360.

Ok, now I am convinced this Turkish guy is a joke account. Well played, sir. Took me awhile to figure it out.

Where are your arguments? You're the joke account here.

We've had this thread a bazillion times in the past.

Its just a ridiculous notion, But the answer is yes... they would have gone bust though.

Also:

Imagine if the Wii had launched at $299 with HD support.... even bigger winner than it is.

Imagine if the 360 hadn't had RROD and cost $299 and had Kinect bundled from day one....winner, PS3 DOA.

Its pointless.

Neogaf down or something?

Turkish was banned from GAF

Lol. Howcome?

Uh I explained it earlier in the thread. It was for port begging. I'm unbanned in 2 days though so no worries. It looks like there are a lot of vgchart lurkers over there.

It is a HD webcamera and those were still pretty expensive in 2006/2007, besides that Motion Plus wasn't included with the Wiimote by default in 2006 because the technology was still too expensive ...

When you start to add in the consequences of Sony spending less R&D money on the Cell processor (because it would be too expensive of a CPU to use in a conventional console) you start to realize that Microsoft couldn't have produced the Xenon CPU without piggybacking on Sony's R&D and therefore even the XBox 360 wouldn't be equal to what it is today.

Certainly, I was being dramatic when I compared it to the Wii, but (realistically) a $400 system that includes the PS-Eye and move would (probably) have been a dual core PowerPC processor running at 2.5GHz, 256MB of memory, a GPU based on the Geforce 6600, and a DVD drive. If Sony wanted to keep the Blu-Ray drive the processing power and memory would have needed to be further scaled back.

I would say yes. The only big problem for the PS3 was price.
If the PS3 would have launched for a lesser price, with the huge amount of hype surrounded it back in 2006, it could have sold amazingly well, and it could have kicked Microsoft out from the gaming market.

EDIT: Well, obviously, PS3 would be less powerful, and with less capabilities, because  Sony lost LOTS of money with the 599€/$ price. So they couldn't afford a lesser price for the same hardware as it is now.

cell was developed by toshiba, ibm and sony. not from sony alone. and ms didn't produce or even develop xenon but ibm did.

your view is to tight to this topic.

It may have outsold the 360, but it wouldn't have had a huge change.

With the change, we'd see (end of 2013):

Wii-90mil
PS3-88mil
360-45mil

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Its amazing how much Sony has managed to sell  despite the situation of putting Blu Ray in their console. Never has there been more respectable sales for third place for so much put into one console. Last gen in Nintendo and Microsoft could barely make it over 25 M. The gen before that because of Sony, Nintendo couldn't even sell 35 M consoles during the 64 era. Sony fucks up and is still able to sell 66 M consoles in a gen. Thats a testament to the fact that they are still doing something right despite all the financial decisions they made at the beginning of the gen. Sonys walking away with 80 M+ for the PS3. Win, lose or draw, that speaks volumes about what they deliver.
