I'm a Croat and when I was growing up I was addicted to ÖRF. And when I got a bit bigger I was addicted to RTL, MTV DE, Viva..
I've learned German for 12 years in total, and since I watched German TV channels all the time I never had any problems with it. I don't think that language itself is challenging. Not like my mother tongue.

I think if you speak english it shouldn't be too hard to learn german aside from pronunciation, they are both germanic languages and fairly similar.
Haus = House
Maus = Mouse
Hund = Dog (Hound)
Fisch = Fish
and so on. Also, words like Kindergarten, Zeitgeist, Bratwurst, Schnaps, Blitz etc. are directly taken from german.
Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

I spent six years learning German in school.
Looking back, I would say that I remember approximately 40-60% of what I learned :( Been over one and a half year since my last lesson.
I'll start my fifth year of school-taught German soon.
My perceptions of it never changed, though. Maybe because I wasn't really paying mind to the stereotypes, but it certainly never sounded angry to me.
It hasn't helped me so far, but it will when I go to Europe next year.
Oh, and it's very easy. Everyone I talk to who has tried it and quit say that the verb at the end thing is hard and silly. It's not, you just have to get used to occasionally having verb at the end.
