Forums - Sales - 3DS vs PSV 2012 Edition: 3DS 30m or PSV 5m? (Oct 6th: Vita > 3m!)

Which milestone will occur first: 3DS 30m or PSV 5m?

Both before Jan 5th, but 3DS first 77 16.67%

Both before Jan 5th, but PSV first 35 7.58%

3DS before Jan 5th, PSV after 179 38.74%

PSV before Jan 5th, 3DS after 59 12.77%

Both after Jan 5th, but 3DS first 83 17.97%

Both after Jan 5th, but PSV first 29 6.28%

Total:462

Not a difficult challenge, even a weak, but not dead, PSV should reach its easy goal earlier than 3DS its ambitious one.

BTW I checked the formidable lifetime Top20 of DS, sales numbers are huge, and Mario and Pokémon constitute the largest part of them both in number of titles and in sales numbers. 3DS, after stumbling, had an excellent start anyway, but can it repeat what DS did?
Also: ceding a larger part of Top20 to 3rd parties will surely make them happy and love 3DS more, but will Nintendo be totally happy of losing some SW market share and profits?

This is sad. We are predicting 3DS to sell 10.8 Million before the PSV a brand new product can sell 2.8 million. Sadly it's true that they may happen. What happened to all the die hard sony fans saying how the Vita was going to be way better then the 3DS. Once again Sony is just showing that they can't make handheld games where Nintendo makes great handheld games. Having the best hardware isn't going to do much in the the handheld market because games like Golden Abyss, CoD, and Assassin's Creed can all be replicated on consoles but better. Nintendo on the other hand has games like Mario, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Professor Layton, etc that all fit great on handhelds.

Now let's look at the what each game will probably sell like.

Vita has games coming like Playstation allstars, Cod, Assassin's Creed, and Little Big Planet. I for one know that I'm not buying a Vita for any of those games as I can already get them on Ps360. The only one that in my opinion fits on a handheld is Little Big Planet. Oh and maybe Tearaway.

Now for the 3DS. Holiday lineup would be Luigi's Mansion, Animal Crossing, Professor Layton, Monster Hunters 4, Pokemon B/W 2, and it just released New Super Mario Bros 2. It also has a good library already and as we all know these games will all have strong legs like Mario Kart 7. Mario 3D Land, Kid Icarus, Kingdom Heart: Dream Drop Distance, Nintendogs + Cats, Zelda: Oracle of Time. When you look at all these games you can see why parents will buy the 3DS during the holidays.

Do not think I hate the Vita, but I do personally find it funny how there was so much trash talked rior of the Vita's release and now we are predicting the 3DS to sell 30 million before the vita can even reach 5.

Very nice, and reasonable, response. It is a very sad situation, and this thread merely highlights the issue the Vita faces.

However, as with most here, the Vita has only shipped 2.2mil, therefore, sold systems are likely closer to 2mil. If you say that, you could predict that the Vita will be selling as low as 20-25k at some point this year. And if you look at the holiday sales for Japan during the LAUNCH of the PSV, you'd have to say it'd be lucky to hit current 3DS sales (I'd expect 300k a week for Vita, max, WW). So...around 4.4mil for Vita, and 29.4mil for 3DS, come year's end.

Obviously the 3DS will hit its target in the thread first.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

I think both can do it.

Can someone link me to a source (preferably one close to the original) for whoever said the Vita shipments were only 2.2m at the end of June. I want to read it for myself as I am unsure it has been interpreted correctly (after all it means the PSP, which is selling even less than PSV and should have already had ample stock, shipped 1 million in that quarter, which sounds daft)

I expect the 3DS can sell between 6 and 8 million in October-December, and will probably sell about 1.5 million before October which means it will (probably) fall short of 30 million in 2012 ...

The PS-Vita (without a price cut) will likely sell between 1.5 Million and 2.5 Million units in October-December, and an additional 250,000 before October which makes it possible to pass 5 million but it could fall short...

There's almost no way Vita won't make 5m by the 5th of Jan. Even IF games like COD/AC don't provide large boosts, 2.3m isn't that much to do over 4 months including the holiday season. Even the unpopular consoles get a big lift from the Xmas rush.

Of course:

It's not the original source, mind, but its the clearest.

PSP shipped 1.2 million during q1 last year. It's not out of the realm of possibilities to think it can ship 1 million this year because there was a new 99 euro model.

In a way, PSP street saved those shipment numbers, imo.
