Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Had No Objections To Mature Approach Of Conker’s Bad Fur Day

Instead of being a game for an older demographic, Rare’s Conker’s Bad Fur Day for Nintendo 64 was going to be a family-friendly title called “Twelve Tales.” Rare wanted to change the game’s direction by targeting a mature audience, and according to Donnchadh Murphy, a former Rare employee, Nintendo had no objections to the developer’s decision. Murphy says that he’s glad it transitioned because “Twelve Tales” was apparently a bad game.

Originally, Conker began development as a family game called Conker’s Quest/Twelve Tales, and then changed into a violent platform game with raunchy humor.  Was Nintendo supportive of Rare’s decision to make such a dramatic change to the game?  Or did they distance themselves from the project?

“Back in those days Rare was the golden child, so when they announced that we were changing direction there was no objections, none that I knew about anyway. I’m so glad it did change, because ‘Twelve Tales’, to put it politely, was not a good game.  Chris Seavor took the reins in BFD and took it a direction nobody expected.”

Nintendo has more recently wanted a variety of games on its platforms -- it just (admittedly) does not make some types of games as well as third parties. So it is not surprising that it welcomed this effort.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

You think they should make another IP that deals with a more "mature" approach or they could just tweak an existing IP to make it more appealing to teenagers/young adults.  I feel like they could make F-Zero into a dirty intergalactic crime fighting story for the story mode (aka Captain Falcon kicks some serious ass) but that probably wouldn't be too interesting in a racer.  Unless they had Captain Falcon outside of his racer running around on foot kicking ass like Batman.

Nintendo's record with "mature" approach is awful -- see Geist.

They should have second/third parties use new IPs.

Geist is one of the worst possible examples.

I can just as easily pull out Killer Instinct and the RE Remakes, RE4.

Geist was simply a subpar game. Nintendo has generally had good success with "wel-made" mature titles.

That would be proving his point though wouldn't it?  You mentioned Killer Instinct which was produced by Rare and published by Midway (along with Rareware and Nintendo) and RE4 = Capcom.

So those are 2nd and 3rd party games.  I was asking about first party games.

Nintendo is a family company and to my knowledge, there are no 1st party mature titles. Geist was as third party as any other game.

It was made by n-Space who started off developing for the Playstation.

Ah some reason I confused Geist with External Darkness.  I haven't played either and I was trying to think of hardcore type games.  I also get confused sometimes with first / second party games considering I don't known exactly which studio belongs to who all the time.

Fatal Frame is now second party. That would probably be as close as we are ever going to get to a true Nintendo developed mature game.

You misspelled "immature".
