I don't want to derive the thread but considering 1 million people asked me if it was really him I feel compelled to answer that yes, it's really him.

I wouldn't put this down as a huge loss at all. Losing Naughty Dog or Santa Monica would be huge. Unfortunetly Studio Liverpool, considering their size, have produced very little this generation. I just wish they'd made another destruction derby, those games were amazing. I'm all for Sony closing studios when they stop producing the goods, begin to stagnate or grow too large and unweildy. At this moment in time Sony could do with trimming some of the fat in SCEWS. Next on the chopping block would probably be parts of the japan studio or the cambridge or london studios. I think the Japan studio works on a lot of the updates on the firmware side of things though, so perhaps despite their size and lack of releases, they are still very productive. |
Reflections (a.k.a. Ubisoft Reflections) made Destruction Derby. Sony owns the IP (since the game was published by Psygnosis who were wholly owned by Sony at the time). So a new Destruction Derby could well be made, but not by Studio Liverpool.
I'd say Cambridge Studio would be the next to go. In fact, I'm surprised it wasn't them instead of Studio Liverpool. They've both had equally poor outputs this generation but Psygnosis had the heritage and the more established IP (WipEout).
I'd say that they'll probably be shut after Killzone Mercenary but we'll see.
| theprof00 said: lol, it's like Sales said, Sony closed down 4 HUGE studios that produce wipeout, buzz, and socom. These are huge titles....that is, until you put them in a list war, then suddenly those titles are crap. Right? hahah |
The Buzz studio was never owned by Sony and has not been shut down (they're still going today) and BigBig Studios were, slightly ironically, never a big studio. And certainly not a HUGE one.
Studio Liverpool - debatable. They were a big studio in the 90's but they were a shell of their former selves these days. I still love(d) them, more than any of Sony's other studios, but they're not big.
Zipper - possibly. They were kinda big, not HUGE.

I agree, but Cambridge is a lot like Bend. They use ips from better studios, take their coding and ideas, and just push out a game. They're like a factory, I'd say.

Instead of cambridge doom, this is from NG, causing some buzz there:
"Well, they had wipeout, that's about it; good luck to them!
Life will go on, Sony has acquired another studio, they will tweet about it soon. "
He looks like an insider, most people are asking the guy to spill the beans

@Buzz studio- Apologies, that's what I get for listening to sales2099 :D

Yeah, Bend really have the monopoly on that right now, they seem to be doing a smashing job. It's a shame, too, since I love Syphon Filter :P
We'll have to see about Cambridge Studio in the future. I certainly hope they stay together, even if it is just making portable versions of pre-existing IP's.
Just noticed this from WipEout 2048's facebook page. Probably won't mean a lot to most of you but I thought it was pretty sweet.
Their status was about the studio shutting down and I noticed this in the comments (what the arrow is pointing to):
(Sorry for the grainy quality)
Anyway, Tim Wright = Cold Storage, composer of most of the soundtrack for the first 3 WipEout games. I'm kinda sure it's him too.
Body in Motion was possibly the soundtrack to my youth x_x

Thanks for the info.
I'd always thought Evolution would have been well suited to tackle the project of revitalizing the IP. They had the crash physics and a strong backbone with racing games to give it a go. Seriously, a destruction derby in HD would be so awesome. I hope it happens in the future, both of the old games are hovering around the million mark in sales, so it's not like it's completely out of the question, perhaps even just a smaller project along the veins of a PSN release.
You may well be right about Cambridge. Cambridge has been a workhorse for Sony for other projects though, including Killzone 2, Heavenly Sword, Eyetoy and Home, so they may well be an essential asset in terms of being available to assist with the development of other projects.
