It's like Nintendo goes out of their way to make the most non-offensive games possible, and in the process they end up offending their older loyal fan base with games that, while great in the gameplay department, contain such childish themes and mind-numbing "stories" that they make you embarrassed to play them in front of your peers. Good luck explaining to your buddies or roommates why there's a copy of Kirby's Epic Yarn in your collection.


Whoa whoa whoa, I really liked Yoshi's Story and would definitely play it some more if I still had a N64.

I'll try to demonstrated, it's hard to put into words and find evidence for what I consider a step in the wrong direction in some of the games. I replied to JWeinCom with music for starters, I'll try to get an analysis of graphics, though I had another thread demonstrating that too, mind you I could push the envelope a little further.

A lot of what he has said seems to have been done in some way with Mario. Though, it's not 2D Mario, but more of the 3D Mario games.
Maybe that's what you should focus more on, HappyD, the 3D Mario's.

@bold. And that's why I'm here to inform you, I see things you and some others may not. What the background noises would add is what you would call ambiance. It sets a mood that the Mario games of late fail to set, the mood where you think "this game is tough", even if it might not be. It's a mood, kind of like the scary noises outside of a haunted house.

I can't focus on either the 2D Mario's or the 3D Mario's because they're both struggling on that front. The reason being that Nintendo isn't taking them seriously imho, especially the 2D ones. The games sell a lot yet Nintendo still treats them like 2nd class. Regardless, 1st class or 2nd class these games need to be rethought to have a mood that _truly_ fits all ages, not in pretense only.

@the 2nd one. You mean the interaction between you and the other traveller playing with you? It's definitely something that could be adopted in Mario, or something like that, which would give the game a different mystique. An addition like that fits in the world of Mario, which to date has not ceased to add new concepts in its games. Preferrably, it would be something less "Happy" than all the happy characters we see in Mario... :(

actually the song you posted "the galaxies greatest waves..." sounds pretty crazy, with jazz influences and even dissonances and notes that dont match
for me its not a kiddy song, but a an insane song made by a crazy guy...

Either you become the developer of Mario and you do all these crazy changes to the series that you want or (not saying this in a mean way) the game might just not be for you anymore. You could've become more of a fan of Uncharted and you saw the "light."

Some changes would be cool, yes of course!, but too much story or even a little could bog down the series. (Things like changing a long grounded series are really delicate, but I think you already know that.)



I have read the thread. Your frame of reference seems clouded by the fact that games and movies are two different things, tied with a bit of nostalgia-syndrome.

Again, it's not about adding worded story, as I mentioned a zillion times in the thread, the story can be unwritten in intricacy, even yielding less script than mario galaxy.

The post I pointed you to (which I'm glad you read) speaks of an unwritten story, the story tells itself by the items, the worlds, the moods, the music. So much can be said without words, using art.

No, not it at all.

I'm looking for a return to the roots because I sense that the roots were better. However, it doesn't stop me from looking at a modern game like Uncharted and think "wow, that's a game with character". Nintendo's Mario has been emasculated in my book, so no this is not nostalgia, but a judgement over the current state of the game and its art direction.

Games and movies may be two different things, but that doesn't stop both from seeking to evoke certain fundamental emotions with the human being that's experiencing them. On the same note, art direction and music are two things that games and movies share strongly in common. Script is another case, and I've addressed that repeatedly in this thread.

So if there's a judgement that's clouded, it's yours, and I will do what I can to clarify, but my experience with you is that you are hard of understanding, no offense.

If I'm reading what you're saying correctly... then Mario already partially does this.

In Super Paper Mario there was that whole lingering(?) apocalypse thing. SMG 1/2 there was that opening and all the boss battles where things were falling around you and great music to make you want to defeat those evil bosses! And in NSMBU it looks like they are really stepping up on the background art and the sounds, have you seen the gameplay? It's cool!
