Castlevania, IMHO it was never that popular of a series anyway, there was only one entry that sold more than a mil (not counting multiplats) and that was SoTN. I think those DS games problem was A they seem to try to capture the magic of the PS1 game, which will never work because people will always compare them to that and they will like SoTN better and just keep playing that and B there are too many releases they dont give the games time to move units and people will just wait cause they know they are going to put another one out anyway. The games are good though. Dont know what this new one on 3DS will do

I'm pretty sure I remember reading somewhere that Circle of the Moon broke 1m copies as well.  I think it was on GT's retrospective they did a while back.

Kind of Edit:

http://www.gametrailers.com/full-episodes/l7v3qr/gt-retrospectives-part-iv--procession-of-portability

go to 9:40: 'The first GBA Castlevania did what it's forefathers could not; sell over 1 million copies'.

They don't expand on whether 'forefathers' is used to describe all previous Castlevania games, or just all previous handheld games in the series.  However I wouldn't be surprised if SotN didn't break 1m copies sold, despite being my favourite castlevania game I have played.  I imagine the game might've seemed backwards at the time for keeping 2d, maybe harming sales, I not sure to be honest.

according to this site, SoTN has sold well over a million and considering it was a greaest hits game for awhile in the US I wouldnt find it hard to believe at all, maybe it wasnt as popular or got that much attention in Europe. But this site has Circle at 890000, dont know who to believe but i could see that game selling a mil, but that only makes it worst, it went from being a mil seller on GBA to the DS games doing an average of 350000??? On DS, which sold a hell of alot more, did people stop caring about the franchise

Mmm interesting read! And it has a few points to it as well.

But couldn't mobile games be sort of a portal to handheld gaming? If kids start playing iOS games they might buy a 3DS later on to get better games?

The thing is, is not really the kids who are playing these games in droves, its mostly adults, and i doubt you will get most of them to start playing the meatier games of the 3DS or Vita if they never gave a damn in the first place, especially if those games are going to be even more expensive. and most kids dont have hundreds of dollars lying around to buy themselves a 3DS.  It isnt unlike the WIi, sure alot of people bought WiiFit and Sports Resort, but how many of those type of people bought Conduit? GE?, COD on Wii? Most of them didnt because they were not interested

What will happen is that generic budget games will not make it this time around.
But there will always be room for good software.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

What they should do is offer both ends of the spectrum: the high end, high quality games, such as Mario and Zelda, AND the $1 games, such as Angry Bird...

thats been going on for awhile, Sony has had its minis and DS had DSiware for sometime, IMHO it was a little bit late to the game, that stuff should have been available for both those systems day 1

Circle was a launch game, so that really helped. Much like SFIV 3D.

sure, but the interest still should have been there, or at least maintained close to the number of people it had. I thought SSF43d would have done better personally

Yup, I don't disagree, I was just injecting facts to your analysis.

I wouldn't expect the same number maintained, but an interesting question would be was the DS one a launch game? If not, it's understandable to see lower sales since there is higher competition. In other words, in the GBA's sales there were many non castlevania fans. Other question, did the GBA have 3 versions of casltevania, I can't remember.

EDIT: Here, this might help:

Whoa whoa whoa.

Who the Hell told you that Nintendo has a third party ecosystem

that is a massive drop between the first GBA game and the 2nd

LOL, this is exactly what I was thinking. The Wii section at just about any store is an avalanche of crap shovelware outside of the Nintendo 1st party stuff whch is usually lumped together.
