Nintendo is indeed too big to fail. Even if the Wii U fails (which I highly doubt from a non-biased perspective) then Nintendo could become a portable games company. Nintendo owns the portable market.

Games can and should tell stories and share ideas through their mechanics. This is the intrinsic element of the medium and this is how experiences should be crafted in video games. No company does this as well as Nintendo and their echoes from the past.

As a big Sega fan I can assure you that it would be a sad day, but that the pain fades. The Master System was fun, the Genesis was legendary, the Saturn was underappreciated, and the Dreamcast was before it's time. Some of my all time favorite games are on those systems and I'll never forget the those glorious days when Sega was at the top of its game. I still enjoy a lot of Sega games, but there are things I miss, mostly the experimental stuff like Rez or the artistic stuff like Panzer Dragoon Saga. I still play those games but I do long for more. If the same happened to Nintendo it would be regretful. But there are more games out there, very good games, than just Nintendo games. It's unlikely that the quality would drop like it did for a time with Sega. What I loved about Sega was it was willing to put out a few misses if it scored a hit from its experiments. Nintendo is less about taking chances and more about capitalizing on what works with a twist. That's why Sega was hit or miss throughout each generations. I'm glad that Sega has found its way back to the light. I have no doubt Nintendo would be able to find its way back to the light as well if the same happened. The world would keep on spining and Mario would keep on jumping. |
i read that post and just thought about how similar sony is sega's dying days. experimental stuff like echochrome or heavy rain. artistic stuff like flower. willing to put out a few misses trying to scrore a hit. yep, sony's future is bleak indeed.
lol reading the headline I thought this was going to be a positive article but it quickly became a pile of crap!
no one is to big to fail though.
CloudeL summed it up pretty well! Dude you need to post more often!

This was funny
man if Sony can take as much damage as they did then im sure Nintendo can take a small loss. Nintendo would have to go BEYOND the bounds of what Sony did this gen to leave the market.
Im sure Nintendo wont be releasing the WiiU at $599 and im sure it wouldnt STILL be losing over $200 each console sold at that price. Im also sure that WiiU dev kits wont be crazy hard to develop for.
Sony showed how an undisputed top game company could ALMOST go under and im sure everybody knows that Nintendos strategy couldnt be any farther from that strategy

Sony's handheld system, the Vita, will now be integrated into several new games in a very similar manner to how the Gamepad would be used for the Wii U. Basically, this makes a PS3 functionally the same as a Wii U, so the innovative edge of the new hardware is lost.
To say that this functionally makes the PS3 the same as the Wii U is a deceptive statement. All Wii U purchasers will have the touchscreen controllers at purchase of the console. There are currently 65 mil+ PS3 owners and 2.5 mil Vita owners. Is Sony going to "gift" Vita's to the 65 million PS3 owners? No. And it will be years before Vita sales reach PS3 levels even assuming that every PS3 owner eventually buys a Vita at some point in the first place. So, it is safe to say that the majority of PS3 owners will not experience the new "functionality" of their system while every purchaser of the Wii U will.
Take motion controls for example. Nintendo had toyed with the idea of making a motion controller accessory for the Gamecube. Realizing that not every Gamecube owner would buy the accessory, they buit a system around the controller. Voila. You have the 96 mil+ selling Wii system. Sony tries to cash in on the success later with Play Station Move with far less spectacular results. While XBox has enjoyed better sales than Move with Kinnect, you still can't compare it to the impact Wii had on this generation. Tacking on an accessory to a system doesn't have the same effect as building the system around the accessory. So, I don't think that Nintendo loses any innovative edge in this respect.
I actually think Nintendo are going to have a tricky couple of years ahead of them. But fail, they will not. And I hope they don't either.
Can't wait to see when the Wii U makes everyone who has stated that the Wii U will fail look ignorant and stupid.

Yeah, I found that statement ridiculous as well.
Someone earlier said that people weren't giving much in the way of rebuttals against the article... seriously? I don't have a problem with objective opinions based on facts, but much of the article just reeks of bias. Just because the author isn't feeling the innovation of the WiiU concept doesn't mean that "nobody" is. Furthermore, the statement that Smartglass + 360 is basically the same as the WiiU and its gamepad is incredibly presumptuous. I think Smartglass is a pretty smart move on Microsoft's part, and sure, they have some features in common, but let me know when the 360 can display a full game on the TV screen and a tablet simultaneously ala the Zelda demo from E3 2011, or for that matter, stream a full game for play on a tablet at all.
Probably the most telling example of the author's ignorance is when he states that "there's no new full-fledged Mario game". Either he's horribly misinformed or doesn't realize what a Mario game is... either way, it's yet another erroneous statement.
