Forums - Nintendo - Battlefield 3 canceled on Wii U, Battlefield 4 is coming

Back at E3 2011, one of the game showcased during a Wii U trailer by Nintendo was Battlefield 3. Which of course more or less confirmed a Battlefield 3 game in development for the Wii U. That was back then. We haven’t heard anything concrete for more than a year, other than developer DICE saying they “see potential” in the Wii U.

Now our source from EA tells us that EA and DICE did in fact start working on a Battlefield 3 Wii U version with help from EA Canada, testing out the possibilities with the GamePad controller. However, that project was shelved when EA and Nintendo had a feud regarding Origin’s integration on the Wii U. This supposedly happened in late 2011, and the team that worked on the Wii U version of BF3 was merged into the team that is currently working on Battlefield 4. Battlefield 4 was confirmed a few weeks ago and will be coming in 2013.

According to our sources, the Battlefield 4 team is now working on the Battlefield 4 Wii U version concurrently with other editions and will be a “straight port” with touchscreen controls. Most of these touchscreen controls and features are said to be available on other platforms as well (Xbox 360 SmartGlass etc.). It’s unknown whether the team is also working on next gen systems. Our source also told us that the Battlefield 4 name is not final and might change in the future.

Battlefield 4 is expected to launch in Fall 2013, with a beta release sometime in the Spring.

More and more ties into the idea that there was a major fallout between EA and Nintendo between E3 2011 and today.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I don't see why this isn't a possibility do to the fact that Battlefield 3 is almost a year old, and it probably wouldn't have sold well in the first place. If this is true, is definitely good new for the system!

Nintendo and PC gamer

nice but im really tired of war games
i want new FP experiences
still ill keep an eye on it

Hum. Sounds like good news to me.

Yeah, there was quite obviously a big fallout between EA and Nintendo since E3 2011. It went from 'an unprecedented partnership' to three ports, one of which is being farmed out to another party and another of which willl have less features than the Xbox and Playstation versions.

Something serious went down.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

this might be because of disagreement but it could also be because its an old game and that they would rather use the resources to make the WiiU version of the fourth installment instead

Less games on a system = good news? Especially a highly praised game with a huge online community?

I'm of two minds. In a way it's good, because it means full focus on BF4 development, but it also means one less game for Wii U, one that I would of loved to see just to see if it would be as scaled back as the PS360 version is. It's also just a great game that now, a whole community misses out on.

bf3 cancelled for wii u is good news? wow they should cancel every game and that will be good news (being sarcastic)

It's funny to me how no matter what, everything always seems to look like bad news for Nintendo.

Wii U was getting lots of "old ports" like Arkham City, Mass Effect 3, Darksiders II, Madden & FIFA '12, Battlefield 3, Ninja Gaiden 3, Tekken Tag Tournament 2. So many people were complaining that these games are old, that there's no point porting them if they'll already have been available on other consoles for three months to a year. Wii U needed more "current" games like RE6 and Bioshock Infinite with more-or-less simultaneous releases on all consoles, the way ACIII is happening.

Now it comes out that work on one of these ports may have been cancelled to focus on a future game getting a simultaneous release, and people complain. That's bad for Nintendo. One of the games Wii U supposedly didn't need has been cancelled to focus on a game everyone said Wii U DOES need, and it's BAD?

MAKE UP YOUR MINDS, GAMERS: would Battlefield 3 have been a good title for Wii U to get? If so, you effectively admit that getting Mass Effect 3 and Arkham City are good moves. Or is it good that EA has decided to focus on porting newer games? At least try to be consistent!
