Isn't it intellectually bankrupt to pretend that the opinions of video game journalists are credible, especially when it's known that many of them are fanboys and/or paid off by video game companies in one form or another?

Actually, Nintendo is one of the companies that throws the most money in website advertising, and Nintendo games indeed generally get high marks. There are quite some Nintendo fanboys among the press so yes, I think it's pretty safe to assume that HD games were far above Nintendo games during this gen.

Hmm, compared handheld+home-console of nintendo to home-consoles of competition. To be fair, the handheld of the competition should be included:
Wii+DS: 248.78M
XBOX360+PS3+PSP: 208.07M
 (numbers based on http://www.vgchartz.com/analysis/platform_totals/ )
Nintendo-consoles outsell the competition by more than 40M. But XBOX360+PS3+PSP currently sell better than Wii+DS. As the OP states, they could outsell Nintendo with time, but the gap is not that big (20%).
