Forums - Gaming - THQ “a little too late” to capitalise on “bonafide hit” Metro 2033

THQ won’t make the same mistake twice, Metro franchise communications head Huw Beynon has said; the publisher is now taking 4A Games’ post-apocalyptic series very seriously.

“I think we said last time around, on Metro 2033, that THQ came to realise a little too late, that it had this unpolished gem on its hands,” Beynon told Ausgamers

“And for whatever reason, that meant that the first game didn’t quite get the production support from THQ that could have raised the polish and quality level a little bit. It obviously didn’t get the lasting support at the same time, but despite that, it went on to become a significant success – it’s referred to as a cult-hit still. But we sailed past a million sales on PC alone, so I think we can stop calling it that, and actually call it a bonafide hit.”

Whatever made THQ overlook the first game’s potential, it’s changed it mind for sequel Metro: Last Light.

“This time around, they were aware of what the potential could be, so we’ve seen that extra support, both in terms of focus from them in assisting production – generously giving the studio a little more time to get the quality that we needed,” Beynon noted.

“Given THQ’s situation, that was obviously a big decision, but I think one that’s going to pay off.”

The publisher’s marketing muscle has been helpful, too; Beynon said a live-action trailer put together by THQ had been “hugely important” as it has “catapulted the game back into the public consciousness”.

Metro: Last Light arrives on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in early 2013.

I beat Metro 2033 today actually. I was super impressed and really couldn't put it down. Not many games blended FPS and Survival horror as well as Metro did. I'm going to be purchasing the new one day one. Question now is on PC or Wii U?  Lol at there only being around 100k sales tracked on this site when it's sold over 1 million on pc.

Well the Wii U version was indefinitely put on hold and if you have a decent rig it will look a lot better on PC. So I would say PC lol.

As for the sales it is likely undertracked on here (most of the sales are from estern Europe on PC, which VGchartz doesn't really track) but also I imagine a large % of the sales were generated during the many steam sales where the price has dropped as low as $5 a couple times now.

Yep, it's a pity. PC-gaming is strong in Europe and especially in eastern europe. And europe is the region where the books from Dmitry Glukhovsky has it biggest success. Obviously most in Russia, as Glukhovsky is a russian author, but for instance here in germany it is also very  much liked. I can recommend the books by the way, they are great. I should try the game too, did not so far.

Yeah I purchased it as part of the THQ collection pack.  I'm a little concernced i'll need to update my rig for it.  I had some pretty bad slow down on the above world in Metro 2033 going below 30 fps.  The gameplay trailer on the Metro website demonstrates that the graphics are incredible.  Probably the best looking gave I've seen.  Right now I'm rocking two 5750s in crossfire.  Wonder what I should upgrade too and if it's worth it.

Glad to hear that they want to give the series more support. As awesome as the first title was it was still packed with minor glitches and poor AI. Seeing a mini gun terrified me at first, but hopefully they will stand by their words and make it very rare.

That said, I can't wait to see the story unfold. Hopefully on a Wii U.

I look forward to when people start using "5As"
