I do not think the recession is a good excuse....

Assuming there has never been a recession in the past 40 years gaming has been around, people have always bought hardware/software despite that - look at Japan in the early 90s.

DS was a monster in Europe. It used to sell 200k+ each week like there was nothing else to do.
