That wasn't a joke. Aaron Rodgers blew that lady off...
I think that Harbaugh should have stayed with Smith. Notice that I said these things before the loss. If his ceiling was him having the third highest QB rating in the NFL, then I really don't see anything wrong with having that guy as your starter.
Edit: He's now fourth behind RG3. What a year that guy is having.

The test for me though isn't "highest personal metrics," it's his ability to help his team. And in that regard, I find him simply middling: even last year the Niners rarely put up a lot of points on offense, and while they have gotten some big blowouts this year they were to extremely mediocre teams.
Additionally, he's only fourth in QBR if you use ESPN's metric. He's 29th with the more traditional metrics. I don't use this to illustrate that ESPN sucks (they've got that covered), but merely to point out that relying on that is less than ideal.

I just looked up his stats and he is 4th according to the classic rating, 7th according to ESPN (ESPN does suck), and 29th according to numbers that you pulled out of your imagination.
But you're right. I'm not a guy for numbers either. I look at how far a guy can lead a team and I watched Alex Smith take the 49ers to the NFC Championship game last year that they would have won if it weren't for Kenny Williams younger brother. I have also seen Kaepernick struggle twice against the Rams. Games that I'm pretty sure that Smith would've won.
I repeat that if Kaepernick doesn't at least take the 49ers to the Super Bowl this season, it's the wrong move. I think that you are supporting the move because it makes it more likely for the Packers to knock them off in the playoffs. What happened last time Alex Smith played against the Packers?
